Do you want to make addition easier for the kids? Making the numbers in the mathematical equation easier helps in making the whole process of addition a lot easier for the child, but how could the kid adjust such a thing?

In this addition strategy which is about making the numbers easier is all about adjusting the numbers until they become easier to work with and easier to calculate mentally. Adjusting the numbers and making them easier happens when we have those in the 6, 7, 8 and 9 bracket and want to bring them up to multiples. Adjusting the number happens when the number we already have are very close to a multiple because we don't want to be doing big calculations.

One example to make it easier to understand is solving the equation of 35+59. To make it easier for the child, he/she will need to adjust the number to make it easier for the mental calculation. While adjusting the numbers, kids should focus on both sides. When the child adds one to 59 to make it 60 for easier addition, he/she will then need to remove that added one from the other number which is 35 to become 34. Now the equation should be much easier for the child to solve, it will be 34+60=94.

The steps which you are supposed to go through with the child in order to learn this addition strategy of easy numbers start with first identifying a number that is near to a multiple of 10, counting on to the next multiple number which is close to the one which the kid identified, adjusting the other number to make sure that the calculation is balanced and that the final number will be correct, and finally come to the final step which is doing the calculation.

There are different mental math strategies that kids could depend on in math and it is important so that the kids have a wealth of strategies to use and choose from. The kids will most probably choose a natural preference for one strategy or the other, but these different strategies could be actually used in different situations and the child will even find that their own preference might not be the best one.

It is important to talk through these different steps with your child and get them to identify them as well so that they get to know what they are actually doing. When you are talking through this strategy and those steps with your child, make sure that they are understanding because if they understand and have a good understanding of it, they will actually feel comfortable when it comes to using it.

One of the other famous strategies that are used with addition is partitioning and it could be applied to this strategy we are discussing here which will also make addition more easier for the child and help them to do it mentally without the need to record it on a piece of paper (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Cf08KP92zo).

These strategies include the ones used for addition and which is mainly about reordering and partitioning (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdux-Xn35qE) and there is also the method related to subtraction which is mainly about removal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSYXMxtzGbA) as well as different other strategies which depend on the operations that are made (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWE2AzEsgU4).

Parents homeschooling their kids should never worry because kids will eventually learn the lesson no matter how long it might be taking from them because it usually differs from one child to the other, just give them the time and help and they will eventually get there.
