What is a number line? Number lines are used for counting, whether forward or backwards, to teach the child addition and subtraction while jumping on them. Number line to 100 is used with the big chunks and allow kids to do big calculations.

One of the important and initial tips that parents receive when they teach their kids to use the strategy of number line is to do so with the small numbers because when it comes to the big numbers, it all turns out to be more difficult. In this video, teaching kids to use number lines with big chunks will be the main focus.

Using number lines with the big chunks does not happen in the same way of using it with the small numbers, but it will need to go through the step of partitioning the smaller number which will be removed from the bigger one. In addition, reordering is needed to make it all easier for the child; place the bigger number first (in head) and count on the smaller one (on paper or in head) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdux-Xn35qE).

First of all, teach the child to choose the bigger number of the equation and place it first then put it on the number line to start counting from it. The second step is to partition the smaller number to tens and units and remove it from the bigger number; for example, if the equation is 42-12, the kid will need to place number 42 on the number line then partition 12 to 10 and 2 to make it easier for jumping on the number line and bringing out the final answer. These jumps could happen with one big chunk or small regular jumps, it depends on the child and what is easier for him/her (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Cf08KP92zo).

There are different mental math strategies for addition and subtraction and since they are considered mental then kids should understand that at first they could record their steps and calculations by using the number line and jumping on it to eventually count those jumps, but they should at some point start doing these calculations mentally in their heads without having to do it all on paper (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn2YBpCIzis).

Addition is the first lesson taught to the kids when it comes to math since it is the easiest and the most common after learning to count (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj5fjISL744). In addition to the mental math strategies which we are referring to, there are also those different mathematical games which are also considered interesting for the child, such as using Lego (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLfSeSHWE78), using play doh (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEQQl0u2Muk), using the kids little monster characters and lots of other games that could be all played with the different tools that are found in every house without the need to spend a lot of money to buy them.

Practicing is the most important step to be taken in order for the child to move from the written phase to the mental one and also for them to learn the lesson in general, so parents should keep practicing along with their kids and teach them how this whole method works for them to learn addition.

Never worry about the time it takes your child to learn a thing because kids are not the same, some might learn fast while others could take time, some might enjoy specific methods while others could find them uninteresting, so always choose the method according to the child and their likes and dislikes and never rush into a lesson because they will end up finding it difficult to learn.

Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are different mathematical operations that could be taught in different methods and strategies according to the operation, the numbers and the way preferred by the child.

Choosing the interesting strategies and techniques is always the best thing to do because kids love challenges and that's what brings them to get excited about the whole lesson and ask for its repetition.
