Writing numbers and doing the calculations could happen through several ways, there is the practical, the visual, the magnetic numbers, the number line, the number cards and the white board. Every single one of these methods add a new skill to the child and at the end makes him/her more confident.
In every single method of these, there is a new part of the kid's mind opened to new methods of thinking and new ways which they could consider in solving their mathematical problems. In the practical way, the whole idea is on using the Lego blocks and in this case, parents should first ask the kids whether they could read these blocks into real mathematical numbers or else not. If they could, then they have managed to translate the objects into numbers or in other words knew how to count. In order to move in the same way, kids will need to place the right number of blocks that would represent the answer for the equation. Once the child solve the equation practically, it would be a good idea if the parent asked him/her to write down the whole equation with using numbers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQxUX7XZmGw).
The second method is the visual; the visual is all about actually seeing the objects that the kids will work on, either adding or subtracting, and solving the equation according to them. The visual is all about the pictures, so the kids could draw the shapes themselves to solve the problem, if it is about subtraction, they could cross the number that should be taken away from the drawn objects in order to come out eventually with the final answer. And again, after solving the problem in the method needed, the parent should talk with the child about writing it all down in numbers.
There is also the magnetic numbers method and this is the one that depends on the small magnetic numbers and mathematical signs that the kids could use instead of writing to learn math and solve the mathematical equations they might be exposed to. This is one of the interesting methods used for the kids because they love to play with those small magnetic numbers, the thing is that they will be the ones doing the whole equation according to the question proposed to them by the parent. If the parent asked about the answer for removing one from four, the kid will need to show that by writing the equation and placing the answer as well (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3q7imQuRBQ).
Moving forward with the other methods that one could use, there is the number line technique and on this, the child tends to make jumps according to the equation they need to solve to find the answer they want. They will write numbers on the line and then if the equation is 4 + 1 then they will stand on 4 and jump one time to get their answer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn2YBpCIzis).
The number cards technique depends on using the cards with the written numbers on them to make the equation and to solve it. It could also be more fun if the mathematical signs are also done with the card paper so that the child could play around, make sure the parent did not do any mistakes, and so on.
The last mathematical method we have here is the whiteboard and this is actually one of the most basic because the parent could write any equation on it and the child could easily answer with writing down the number, and the kid could be also the one writing the whole equation according to what the parent has asked him/her to do.
Math could always be fun according to how it is taught and what the parents are actually doing to make it more interactive and challenging. Instead of going the ordinary way and using the pen and the paper to teach the child how to add or how to subtract, parents could actually depend on other fun tools and games to make it more exciting, such as the Lego blocks, the magnetic numbers, the whiteboard, the number cards, and those other methods that depend on drawing and jumping on the number line.
