What are number stories? Number stories are one of the recording calculations' methods that are used to enhance the thinking skills of the children and help them to solve the mathematical problems without finding much difficulty in the process.

Number stories could be played anywhere and for those going on trips by car for a long distance, they could play these math games in the car. Number stories could go in all the different directions, the kids could solve the story and translate it into numbers and they could be the ones asked to draw these stories.

The idea behind number stories is starting to get children to think a little bit more and start to apply those basic math skills that they have learnt and also start to apply their understanding of addition. Number stories could start with small numbers before they could eventually start making it a little bit harder for the child and choose something bigger than one.

How to approach a number story? How to create a number story or get your child to create a number story? That's basically what we want to deliver to the child through this video. A number story is known to be an oral problem, it starts with telling the child a number story and then they will need to create a pictorial representation for it and finally the formal calculation which will get them to their final answer.

Telling the child a number story should be always clear so that they could understand what you are saying, could translate those numbers in the story to real drawings and pictures which they are finally going to draw on their whiteboard before eventually coming to the last step of recording the calculation and bringing out the final answer.

Sometimes giving the kid a little bit of help will make it easier for them to learn and better for them to imagine how the whole game usually goes. Parents could start with drawing the first part of the equation and let the kids complete the rest of the calculation and then record the calculation and answer the whole equation.

After the child get used to the idea of translating and recording problem stories, they should then go forward with being the ones making up stories from the drawings they are seeing in front of them and once they translate these drawings to stories, they should also be ready to find the answers for these equations as well.

Number stories are really fun activities for the children since they could create silly and fun stories but at the same time they are applying those math skills, they are using those numbers, they are practicing number formation and they are also putting their skills into context, which is very very important and at the same time it allows them to see the relevance of math and to see the everyday-ness of math that is used in the real life, which is very important for children since it will give them the chance to think about when to use a specific thing and why they are doing that.

This is one of the valuable activities that does not need any resources in order to be done or used, it is simple yet could manage to teach the children lots of things. There are different other activities which we have here on our channel, such as the number line games (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn2YBpCIzis), different methods for writing numbers and calculations (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eINkXkMo5fU), the mathematical game of exploding the number (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMFcLImo5Gk), as well as those other puzzles and tricks, games with Lego and those with play doh, which the kids could rely on to learn math in the most fun and interactive ways possible.
