Want to help your children be better at solving mathematical equations and problems?
You should help them take steps towards understanding without jumping too far ahead for their comprehension.
We can help with some fun math games for you to try with them.
Multiplication is considered a little bit harder than addition and subtraction. There are different methods used in multiplication for kids, such as teaching them the times tables (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r6IN-h9d-I), the number line which is also used with addition and subtraction (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5v0AjM0jcPA) and the basic multiplication method that is all about the grid table method.
As much as these multiplication methods are considered the most important in growing their understanding of multiplication, there is also math vocabulary which children should be well aware of - this vocabulary will be about specific words used in KS1 before moving to the higher grades.
Children should be able to understand the questions given to them in order to know what they are supposed to do with the mathematical problem placed in front of them and start working on it. Multiply could be the main word but there is also "double" which is the same meaning as multiplication. From the other words in the mathematics vocabulary and which are related to multiplication, there are "repeated addition", "times", "array" and there are those general words that are also used and which include "lots of" and "groups of".
These are the words that we consider the most important in math vocabulary that children in KS1 should be well aware of before they move up to the next grade and find themselves facing new words which they don't know.
Putting questions on a whiteboard and asking the kids to solve them, in the same way, is one common method used by teachers in schools and parents at home. In order to get a little bit creative and expand their learning while making it fun, play some games with them in an attempt to teach them something new in solving mathematical problems.
There are different math games for kids that we have on our channel that parents could follow while homeschooling their kids and even teachers could sometimes depend on in schools.
There are those counting games for kids done with using building blocks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3q7imQuRBQ), there are lessons about learning numbers played with the small characters or cars that the kids have from toys (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsx_YrR9CmE), there are also the subtraction and addition games played with play-doh that could also teach the kids something (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw91epryD28) and there are also the mental math tricks related to multiplication which the kids will also love to learn something through (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYvf790iHUc).
Teaching children maths can happen in different ways and math games are just one of them. In addition to the games, inserting the vocabulary of math within the daily interactions will also help in the process of learning; ask them to count something for you, to tell you how much you still need in order to have a specific number of something, etc. That is the way they will start to implement the rules they have learned in maths in their lives and know that what they take inside the math class is not just for answering its questions, but also for the everyday life situations that they might pass by in the future.
There are lots of words in the math vocabulary and when it comes to multiplication for kids, there are also some specific words that are usually mentioned and referred to, so make sure that you are using them all with your kids.
