Addition for Kids - Number Facts - Math Games - How to Add?
Are you searching for ways to teach the kids how to add? Addition always comes at the beginning of the math journey and there are actually different ways to be used for teaching the kids, the most important thing is to take the ladder in the right way and order.
There are different names given to this mathematical technique that Michelle talked about in this video but Michelle herself tends to call it the "numbers bond". The numbers bond name is chosen because it reflects the purpose of this lesson, it teaches the kids to find the bonds between the numbers in order to make it easier for the kids to solve the mathematical equations given to them.
Adults and kids older in age might at first consider this something easy that does not need all the attention given to it, but actually it is necessary to let teachers and parents know the rules to follow them from the early beginning with the kids at such age.
Adults and older kids know for example that one plus nine would result in 10 and that is exactly the kind of bond that kids should be aware of and not just that, but kids should also know that the reverse would give them the same answer and that addition is not supposed to be done in a specific order or way. Putting it as 1 + 9 would be the same as putting it in the reverse way as 9 + 1 and both will end up giving the same result at the end.
Trying to show your kid how this reverse thing looks like or how to explain the whole thing for them could be done through using play doh or Lego, whatever you please, but it could also happen through writing on the white board and this is exactly how Michelle intended to explain it, she drew two lines of "x" on the board but with different colors and in an opposite way, this will let the kids understand it more through seeing it in front of their own eyes.
There are different techniques and methods to use when it comes to teaching kids how to add and these methods include the different math games that the kids enjoy the most. On our channel, you will find different educational videos that would bring you different ideas that would help teachers at school and parents homeschooling their kids to educate them and teach them math, English, crafts and cooking.
There are lots of math games which we have played with the kids before to either teach them something new, test their already known facts or just to keep their minds working. Kids could learn addition through playing with their favorite small characters and they could also do the same with Lego pieces (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ART8iVG3yHg0), they could depend on number lines in order to learn how to add (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn2YBpCIzis), there are also those basic math games which kids love to play with using play doh (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw91epryD28) and these games come in addition to those mental math games that teachers and parents could still play when it comes to addition but with using the white board (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v-28FdX3m8).
Kids are not all the same, some might find specific games and ways more interesting than others, and that is exactly why you as a teacher or parent should try several methods to know which one is considered the most suitable for the kids you are teaching and see which is the one they are responding to in a positive manner.
When you are following any of the mental math techniques for the kids (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfxsR6sv4jk), you should be able to explain your point in the right way, you should make sure that they understood the technique you want them to follow and you should also make sure that the kids are finding it interesting and love to play the game or follow that method in solving the mathematical problems you are imposing.
Try to play with the kids and be part of the lesson you are giving. Give them the chance to ask you questions and let them wait for an answer and let them correct you when you trick them with giving a wrong answer at some point. Always give the kids the chance to think and never let them feel that you are in a hurry.
We will be pleased to help you with answering any questions you have regarding maths and addition for kids, just send these questions over :-)!
