What are fine motor skills? Fine motor skills are referred to the combination of small muscles in movement along with the eyes, these movements are usually referred to the synchronization of the hands and the fingers along with the feet, wrists and toes. Fine motor skills help in the growth of intelligence and they don't stop at specific age, but they actually develop throughout the different stages of human development.

Part of developing these fine motor skills for toddlers and preschoolers is about helping them to understand what are patterns and how they could deal with the whole process of creating them, as well as be able to differentiate the different colors that exist out there (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAkheW7UCDA). Creating patterns could be taught to preschoolers through lots of games and lots of different methods and the one we have for them today is done through using play-doh as the base and a spaghetti stick to place the small pieces of plastic straws in it.

This is a great activity because it could be played through lots of different ways, parents could ask the kids to make a pattern out of the straws by choosing two colors only, they could start a pattern and ask the child how to complete it, they could ask them to create a pattern out of all the colors that are available and they could also ask them to separate the different colors of straws and then start choosing which colors they want to play with and create their pattern.

This is one activity through which the kids could not only develop their fine motor skills, but they will also learn the colors and differentiate between them through the whole process. One of the other tools used in playing this game or teaching the kids this lesson is through using cheerios with different colors instead of the plastic straws and even treating the kids with them if they managed to give the right answers and create the needed patterns.

Sometimes parents use such games in order to teach the kids counting, addition and subtraction, and this also happens through asking them to place a specific number on the stick, place an equation and ask them to place the same number of cheerios on the stick, start asking them how much these cheerios would end up being if we added or subtracted from them, and so on (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwhPTaFJRkc).

It is always interesting for the kids when they get to learn something through the tools or toys which they love to play with and use in general, such as the play doh which is found in every single home with kids as well as the cheerios which they love to eat and thus will love to play with and get rewarded or treated with as well.

When it comes to choosing the right methods and games for teaching kids something new for them, you should always consider them according to the interests of the child and those methods and games which he/she finds more interesting because kids are different, they not only learn in different time intervals but they might also be different in the ways they might depend on to learn a new lesson.

Understanding the patterns and how they should be created, knowing the different colors and their names as well as being able to differentiate between them, are all things that kids and preschoolers could learn through this activity which will also be helpful when it comes to developing their fine motor skills.

Fine motor skills could include lots of things that kids come to learn and they are also related to their age, but the tools and games that could be played and used are actually the same and some of them could be even done without having to spend lots of money on them.

Learning the letters (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7GsJrDdCVU), learning the numbers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I0FdpAigpU), patterns and colors are all things that could be taught through play doh and which the kids will end up enjoying.

If you are looking forward to teach your kid more fine motor skills, there are different games and lessons that kids could learn through and don't worry, getting creative in homeschooling is not hard and will always work.
