Word Games | CVC Words Games | Phonics for Kids | Phonics KS1 | Letter Sounds | Free Teaching Resources
When it comes to the resources used for teaching kids at home, parents will always prefer those free or cheap ones. This educational video is to teach kids to form words, to train their fine motor skills through touching the letters, as well as being a good activity for tricky words and phonics.
What do you need in order to try this activity with your child? All you need for this activity is a pipe cleaner, small pieces of straw which you could cut from the big one, and those sticky letters for the words that you are planning for your kids to form and you could even write these letters with a whiteboard pen.
How to start this activity? You will first need to prepare the whole setting, so you will start with sticking the pipe cleaner from one side on the table with a small piece of tape and then bend it a little bit (to look like that shape you can see in the video). At this point, you will have the setting ready for your kids to start playing and training their skills when it comes to CVC and tricky words.
CVC words are known to be those with a consonant, short vowel and consonant-vowel, such as cat, bed, hot, mom, dad, dog, etc. and these are the ones we are focusing on in this video so that we could train the kids on such tricky words (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27qMpF434ts).
The first thing you will do is ask the child to form a word from those letters that you have - sometimes this might be a little bit hard so you could choose the word and ask them to form it. When the kids are choosing the letters and placing them in the pipe cleaner, let them spell the letters along the way - this will help with the phonetic part (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQoFRGX83to).
This fun little activity for the kids is an interesting one because it does not only help with CVC and tricky words, but it also helps with phonics since kids will be asked to spell the sounds of the letters while they are placing them and it also helps with the fine motor skills when the child gets to touch the small straws with their fingers.
This is a practical activity that does not need a lot of resources in order to practice some words with the kids. We have other ideas which you could try as well and which are all found on our channel, such as learning the tricky words through the small magnetic numbers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3XSDGpgqOU), or learning some tricky words along with how they should be spelled correctly through playing with paint (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqzSSBu02TQ).
The process of teaching the child a new thing is interesting and creative because you could possibly think about using different resources from their toys to the things you already own at home and happen to be safe at the same time - this is also an important time for the parent to examine how he/she could get creative with teaching his/her child at home.
Since we are talking about CVC words, we should also mention the importance of phonics and what it is exactly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZ5icwjFri4), share with you some ideas related to teaching kids how to read (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMg-ayEJXW0), teaching them the ABC's and how they should remember them or link them to words they already know (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIylRqK7NsI), etc.
The most important thing to consider when you are considering a new activity for your kids to teach them something is that you are using things they love to play with in general and feel interested about using because that's how you are going to attract them to the lesson in general.
From the top things to depend on when it comes to such activities, there are the Lego pieces, the play-dough, the magnetic numbers, and every other thing they could use to bring their creativity out to the world - sometimes straws attract their attention as well, so never worry about using them.
