Punches weren’t the only thing raining down on the White House South Lawn Sunday evening as thousands of UFC fans, left-wing protesters and supporters of President Trump descended on the nation’s capital to celebrate the commander in chief’s 80th birthday with a seven-fight card featuring some of the most exciting mixed martial artists going.
After a brief delay to allow a storm system that only dispensed a light drizzle to blow through DC, Trump made his grand entrance from the South Portico accompanied by UFC chief Dana White — to be greeted by a 12-jet flyover and the Zac Brown Band singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Trump and about 4,000 lucky ticketed guests had reserved seats in the custom-made “Claw” — a steel lighting, camera and tarp overhang that dwarfs the adjacent executive mansion — while an estimated 80,000 ticketed guests watched the contests on the Ellipse just to the south.
