The story begins from that eternal time
When there was no existence in the universe.
It was the time when the creation of the universe had not yet even begun.
And the water of the great dissolution was everywhere first.
Neither was there earth, nor sky, nor sun, nor stars
All around was nothing but thick darkness.
And there was just an endless, infinite plain.
In this great cosmic ocean, resembling a mighty river,
Lord Jagat Pālan Hār Nārāyan on the bed of the remaining Nāg
That is, Lord Vishnu was immersed in the yogic sleep, known as Gora Yoga Nidra.
This yoga sleep was no ordinary sleep.
This is a great power of Mother Bhagavati herself; she is Mahamaya.
Those who had wrapped Lord Vishnu in their own Maya.
Oṃ, salutations to the divine Durga, the supreme yogi, the pure one.
Shantakharan Jagashayanam Padmanabham Suresham
The world's support, the sky's abode, the celestial abode, auspiciousness
Lord Sri Hari Vishnu's navel gave rise to a vast golden lotus, and seated upon it was Brahma Ji, the creator of the universe, with four faces.
Those who were simply waiting for the right moment, when they could lay the first foundation of life in this empty and silent cosmos
While Brahma was preparing to create a new Brahmand, on the other side, within the silence of that great ocean, a tremendous calamity was taking shape.
Lord Hari Vishnu Gehan was immersed in yoga sleep.
And in that state, the earwax accumulated in their ears began to take on a terrible, dark form.
She was not dirt, but rather the impurity before the creation of Surishthi; she was darkness.
It was absolutely essential for Lord Narayana to emerge from within.
Because it was destined for it to emerge from this cosmic disorder prior to the creation of a sacred and new righteousness.
And from the impurity emanating from Narayan's body, two mighty destructive forces were born.
This incident was not an ordinary event for Karma.
It was the manifestation of the first two asuras, sin and ignorance, in this universe.
The names of those two giants, which suddenly stirred up the calm waters of Pralé, were
Honey and Catb
Their birth did not come from a mother's womb, but rather emerged from Lord Vishnu's body; that very impurity had taken on the form of the two most dangerous qualities of cosmic energy.
Honey born from pure tamoguna, that is, the living, breathing form of darkness, ignorance, and destruction itself
There, Catba originated from the Rajoguna, in whose veins surged an intoxicating aggressiveness and a colossal ego, craving to grasp the entire universe within its fist.
There was a fundamental purpose in the manifestation of these two in that chaos: to halt the creation of the universe and to perform the dance of destruction.
The Devi Bhagavata Purana states that after their birth, these two brothers performed severe penance in the ocean for a period of a hundred years.
Having heard the celestial voice, they chanted the seed mantra of the divine Mother's sacred utterance.
Pleased by their intense penance, Mother Bhagavati granted them the boon of desired death.
That was impossible for them until they themselves desired it.
Filled with awe, Madhu and Katb were overwhelmed upon receiving the boon of desire, death.
Madhu Kaitab felt that in the entire universe, there was now no one more powerful than him.
There, amidst the swirling waters of Pralay, their gaze suddenly fell upon a divine lotus flower, resplendent and radiant.
Brahmadeva holding the four Vedas in his hands
The Vedas were not merely books, but that supreme knowledge which created the universe.
It was the supreme intelligence without which the creation of the universe would have been impossible.
Both thought that if they were to establish their empire on this new world,
First, we must eliminate this creator of the universe, and then establish our supremacy over all the knowledge of the universe, that is, the Vedas.
Blinded by arrogance over their immense power, both of them launched a terrifying attack on Brahma Dev without thinking and seized the Vedas from him.
Even though he did not wish to, Brahmadev was left helplessly.
The greatest crisis was no longer whether the universe would be created or that the Vedas had been stolen.
The greatest irony was that the supreme wisdom of the Vedas had fallen into the hands of these demons.
There, Medha and Katba were so powerful and colossal that Brahmadeva realized he could not confront them merely by force.
Then, when their gaze fell upon Sri Hari, Nārāyaṇa was deeply immersed in profound sleep, under the dominion of yoga-nidrā.
According to the first chapter of the Durga Saptashati in the Markandeya Purana, Brahma Deva offered the most powerful hymn of praise to the Goddess, known as the Brahma Stuti or the Rajatarasukta.
You are the goddess who destroys the demon of sleep; You alone sustain this universe. You are sleep itself, You are hunger. Please come forth from the eyes, ears, and mind of Narayana, so that He may awaken and destroy these wicked demons.
Pleased by Brahmadeva's hymn, Mother Yoga Nidra emerged from the body of Lord Vishnu. When Brahmadeva narrated the entire account and explained how the demons had stolen the Vedas, she immediately set out to recover them.
Madhu, you're the one who's been causing trouble. First, fight us.
And thus began a great war, regarded as one of the longest-lasting wars in the history of Surishthi.
This terrible war continued without pause for the entire 5,000 years.
We understood Narayan: where there is infinite power and the gift of immortality, there one must rely not on weapons, but on illusion and intellect.
But how could these two be fully endowed with the boon of death, granted by the divine will of Devi Mahamaya herself?
According to the first canto, ninth chapter of the Devi Bhagavata Purana, when no solution to this problem was found
Thus, Sharī Hārī Viśṇu entrusted the primordial power of creation, Mahā Māyā.
Upon Narayana's invocation, the divine power manifested itself directly.
She knew that a great enmity had spread between these two asuras, one imbued with Rajas quality, full of dynamic energy, and the other with Tamas quality, steeped in darkness, both possessing immense powers.
And He is the Most Important, that is, I am the Supreme, there is none greater than Me.
This was their sole desire: to become worthy of worship, and to have exclusive dominion over this entire splendid realm.
Taking advantage of their very arrogance, the goddess smiled and cast the veil of Mohini's enchantment upon the minds of the two asuras.
As soon as the demons came under Maya's influence, their discernment was completely lost.
O Mother, great mother of the universe, mother of all beings, the divine energy, the source of all power
Madhu, Kaitab, both of you are eternal, and as the embodiments of my word, you are also immortal.
Then why this war?
Amar is the mother, yet Narayan has been making us weep for the past 5000 years.
Not breathed for a single moment in the entire 5,000 years
O Goddess, we do not seek just a moment
We are no longer merely powerful and immortal.
Indeed, He is the Lord of all four Vedas.
We ourselves can create a new order.
Our place is higher than that of Pramha and Narayan.
Undoubtedly, Narayan did so with complete courage.
You have waged war against us for such a long time
That makes us happy.
Nisande Narayan is worthy of praise.
Kintu is not better than us.
Nisande Madhu and Catb
There is no doubt in my words.
Your position is extremely high.
But the one who occupies the elevated place
He always blesses and bestows gifts upon those younger than Himself.
So don't you both feel
Narayan is younger than you.
Therefore, you would want to give them a reward.
Certainly
Mango Narayan
Whoever desires the boon
Demand today
We will give you a wife.
Whatever I ask for
You two cannot give me that.
There is nothing in this universe that we are not the masters of.
Lord Narayana, we promise you: whatever you ask for will be granted to you.
Certainly, you two are unparalleled heroes, and far more powerful than I am.
If you are truly pleased with my prowess, and if you genuinely wish to grant me a boon, then grant me this one boon: that your two deaths may be surely ensured by my own hands.
Now came that precise moment, and upon hearing these words, Madhu and Catb stood stunned.
Their own pride had become a noose leading to death. The desire for death, which had once been their greatest strength, had now vanished.
Because, even unwittingly, both had expressed a desire to die in Narayan's hands.
But they were asuras, and filled to the brim with cunning and deceit, just like Shakuni.
Thus, even at the final moment, that cunning mind devised yet another trick.
Both knew that only the endless expanse of water stretched out in all directions up to the horizon.
There isn't even a patch of dry land as small as the tip of a needle.
Alright, Narayan, we shall surely keep our promise. Since you have asked for a boon, we shall grant it.
But you can extinguish our fire only in a place where not a single drop of water remains.
Both knew that the Vedas, which are needed to create the universe, are already with us.
And we will never let those Vedas be overturned so easily.
Then, if the Vedas are not in the hands of the creator, the creation of the universe would not take place at all.
And the implication is that since the creation of the universe has not occurred, the formation of the earth will never happen either.
Both felt it was impossible to find a single dry spot in this endless flood of water.
And they will remain capable of deceiving death once again.
But the fools were unaware. They had forgotten that the sustainer of the universe, Lord Hari Narayana, Himself was present before them.
And they are accompanied by the self-existent power, even beyond time itself. Their existence is solely by their own will.
Whoever has the power to break the law of the Vedas—neither any demon nor even any god possesses such power.
Well, let's get to the story. Lord Vishnu expanded His form to an infinite extent within the Kshana.
Vishwarupa Vasudeva
Confirm it with satisfaction, Madhu Cat, now
I have no part in this water of yours, O Jangupar.
Come, uphold the grace you have been given; place your head upon my feet.
Helpless before their own woven web and the bestowed gift,
Both mighty asuras had to place their heads upon the dried thigh of Lord Narayana.
A terrible, deafening roar tore through that very cosmos.
The immensely radiant and destructive Sudarshana Chakra emerged from Lord Vishnu's hands.
And in the same blow, the heads of those two demons were severed from their bodies.
His vast body lay scattered in that ocean.
According to the Vishnu Purana, Chapter One, along with one verse:
So much fat came out from Madhu and Kaitap's bodies, which were as sturdy as mountains,
It is said in Sanskrit as "meda," and from the congealing of this very meda, this new land was formed.
For this very reason, our earth, made of meda, has been given a sacred name: Medni.
Thus, Ahirbudhnya and Ahankara destroyed two powerful asuras, who feared even death itself.
Afterward, the Vedas were safely entrusted once again to Lord Brahma. And behold the establishment of dharma: thereafter, no demon ever dared attempt to steal the Vedas again.
Well, friends, this tale of Madu and Katb ends here. But even though this story has ended here, countless unknown and mysterious tales of demons' endings still remain unknown, which we will surely bring to you soon.
