The True Story of the REAL Maximus | Marcus Nonius Macrinus

The character of Maximus Decimus Meridius in Ridley Scott's 2000 film Gladiator has become an iconic figure in popular culture, known for his valor as a general, his tragic fall from grace, and his eventual rise to seek justice. While Maximus is a fictional character, he is widely believed to have been inspired by the real-life figure of Marcus Nonius Macrinus, a Roman general and politician during the reigns of the emperors Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. Not much is known about the life of Marcus Nonius Macrinus which no doubt gave the film Gladiator a lot to expand on when portraying him on the big screen as Maximus.
Further, both Marcus and the fictitious Maximus are liked and well known by Marcus Aurelius. However, Unlike Maximus, who loses his family and is enslaved, Macrinus enjoyed a successful career and died wealthy, highlighting the contrasts between the two figures.
