Kaʻahumanu served as queen consort and later as regent of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, a role in which she exercised profound influence and authority. As the favored wife of King Kamehameha I, she was not only his closest confidante but also his most powerful political partner. Her influence endured well beyond his reign, as she continued to govern alongside his first two successors, acting as co-ruler and shaping the future of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
A pillar of her husband’s government, Kaʻahumanu was also the foster mother of King Kamehameha II, a relationship that secured her the position of regent. In this capacity, she shared executive power with the king, guiding the kingdom through a transformative period in its history.
In 1820, she permitted the arrival of the first Christian missionaries to the islands. Within five years, she embraced Christianity herself, taking the English name Elizabeth—a symbolic gesture that inspired many Hawaiians to follow her lead and be baptized into the faith.
Kaʻahumanu also played a pivotal role in foreign diplomacy. In 1826, she assisted in negotiating the first treaty between the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi and the United States, during the presidency of John Quincy Adams—an event that marked the beginning of formal international relations for the young kingdom.
This is her story.
