The Last Englishman | Hereward the Wake

History Profiles

As William the Conqueror ushered in a new era of Norman rule in England, another figure was said to be moving through the misty fenlands with very different ambitions. His name was Hereward the Wake—an Anglo-Saxon nobleman whose resisted the conqueror. His motivation, was vengeance for the death of his murdered family.

A leader of a guerrilla group of warriors and an outlaw in the eyes of the Normans, Hereward quickly became a symbol of native resistance. Yet for all his fame, he remains an elusive figure. What do we truly know about this rebel who dared to challenge the formidable power of William and his armies?

Reliable information is scarce, preserved mainly in the Peterborough Chronicle and the Gesta Herewardi. The latter—an early twelfth-century Latin translation of a now-lost Old English account—was said to have been written by Leofric, a priest within Hereward’s household. By the time it was copied, the original had already been damaged, and missing sections were reconstructed from oral tradition. What survives is a blend of memory, storytelling, and history.

Even the origin of his epithet, “the Wake,” is uncertain. Some trace it to an Old English word meaning “watchful,” while others argue it was a later invention of an Anglo-Norman family claiming descent from him. By the fourteenth century, he is clearly recorded as “Hereward the Wake,” though he has also been remembered as “the Outlaw” and “the Exile.”

Over time, parts of his story may have mingled with or inspired elements of the Robin Hood tradition. Yet regardless of legend, Hereward endures in the English imagination as a champion against Norman tyranny—sometimes even hailed as “the last Englishman.”
