History Profiles

The Winged Hussars were an elite heavy cavalry formation that served Poland and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1503 to 1702. Their name came from the great feathered wings worn on their backs, designed to inspire fear and confusion in the enemy during a charge. These fearsome riders proved decisive in numerous battles and are remembered by history as one of the most effective warrior formations ever to exist, often defeating forces three to five times their own size.

For generations, the hussars stood at the pinnacle of Polish cavalry, maintaining their elite status until their official disbandment in 1776. Known on the battlefield as the “angels of death,” they played a crucial role in many of Europe’s most famous conflicts. After their military service came to an end, the surviving hussars were reduced to ceremonial duties, marking the close of an extraordinary chapter in military history.
