History Profiles

In the dim dawn of England’s first age — when the sea-wind carried sails of strangers and warbands carved kingdoms from fog and memory — a name emerged from the half-light of legend: Ida.

He stands as the earliest remembered king of Bernicia, ruling from about 547 until his death in 559. The chronicles grant us only fragments of his life, yet the echo of his legacy resounds across centuries. From Ida sprang a royal line destined not merely to survive, but to conquer — shattering the resistance of the Britons and forging, from divided lands, the formidable kingdom of Northumbria.

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle tells that he ruled twelve years and raised his stronghold at Bamburgh. There, upon a black crag of volcanic stone where a Brittonic fortress once stood, Ida seized the citadel by force and remade it in his own image. From that iron seat he ruled, and from that height his descendants would reign as kings of Bernicia.
Here begins the story of a dynasty — and the making of a kingdom. This is his story.
