History Profiles

Robert Curthose, the eldest son of William the Conqueror, has been judged by history in many different ways. Some have branded him a traitor, others have hailed him as a hero, and still others have dismissed him as a fool. Yet whatever the verdict, In my opinion he was undoubtedly the most fascinating of William’s sons. The bitter discord that arose between Robert, his father, and his brothers was not born from trivial quarrels; it was rooted in deeper grievances that would echo through the history of England.

Once the recognised heir to his father’s dominions, Robert had received the sworn fealty of powerful lords and barons. Yet fate carried him down a far more turbulent path—one that would see him stand in arms against his own father, William the Conqueror, and even face him in single combat upon the battlefield.

His life unfolded with the drama of an epic tale. He journeyed east to join the great expedition of the First Crusade, where he distinguished himself as a capable commander. There he played a notable role in the campaign that culminated in the capture of Jerusalem from Muslim forces—an achievement that secured his place among the celebrated warriors of the age.

Yet despite these feats, the crown of England never rested upon his head. His younger brothers, William II of England and Henry I of England, would each rule the kingdom in turn, while Robert—the eldest—was forever denied that honour. The reasons lay largely in the bitter disputes that had long divided him from his formidable father.

Today we will explore the life of Robert Curthose and uncover why the man once destined to inherit England’s throne ultimately never ruled it. This is his story.
