During Brahms' lifetime, the string quartet, like the symphony, was a genre dominated by Ludwig van Beethoven's compositions. In 1872, a year before completing his first quartets, Brahms remarked of Beethoven, "You can't have any idea what it's like always to hear such a giant marching behind you!" By writing his first string quartet and symphony in C minor, the key in which Beethoven composed some of his most notable works, Brahms may have been seeking to both acknowledge and break free from his daunting influence.

"Mystical moors, unspoilt spruce and mountain pine trees characterise the landscape of the Lombachalp. Together with Sörenberg, it forms one of the largest and most impressive moorland areas in Switzerland (86 km²). It is also part of the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance (BLN), the Augstmatthorn Federal Game Reserve, and the Hohgant-Seefeld Cantonal Nature Reserve.

A comprehensive conservation plan has been in place on the Lombachalp since 2007: the Visitor Information and Management Plan. The municipality of Habkern is responsible for this plan. To this end, it established the Lombachalp Commission, which developed the conservation plan with input from various stakeholders and monitors its implementation.
