What if the story we have been telling about Neanderthals has been built on a misunderstanding so deep that it has blinded us to what is sitting plainly in front of us, preserved in stone, smeared across tools, and embedded in the quiet layers of caves like Le Moustier and La Quina, where something does not quite fit the neat narrative of slow decline and inevitable replacement, but instead hints at a population that was experimenting, adapting, and then, quite suddenly, disappearing.
