Mangrove apples are a tree species often grown along canals in the South of Vietnam. Because it has a massive root system, it will help prevent the soil from eroding into the river.

The Vietnamese name of mangrove apples means "poor". That's why it is often called the poor man's food. Another reason is that it grows everywhere, so it's completely free. Mangrove apples have a sour taste and aroma when ripe, very suitable as a seasoning for braised dishes and soups of rural people.
