The trip includes two distinct dives—one inside the volcanic crater and one along the outer wall—featuring encounters with reef sharks, octopuses, and whales, all while enjoying the hospitality and services provided by the dive operator.
Good morning and welcome to our fourth day on Maui.
Today we are up before the sunrise again.
And the reason we're up is such a special one.
We are scuba diving Molokini Crater.
It's going to be such an amazing set of dives today.
I've been looking forward to this for so long.
I haven't been here in over 14 years and it's just such a unique experience to go diving
in the middle of a volcano crater.
So we have a lot to look forward to.
Kenita is excited.
Arriving at Ma'alaea Harbor, we could barely make out our destination, 9 miles on the horizon.
We chose Maui Dive Shop and after gearing up from their convenient equipment truck,
we loaded on to our boat, Makapua.
Alright I've got my boat coat on, which means that we are officially on the boat and have
some amazing breakfast burritos and all of this food.
This is shaping up to be quite a wonderful day already.
They even have sunscreen that we can borrow.
They have absolutely everything you need.
No!
Five second rule.
I'll be diving today and I'll be asking you guys how much air you have by going like this.
Cool?
Alright, so we just had our first dive briefing of today and we are going to be diving inside
Molokini Crater first and then the second dive we're going to be diving on the outside.
It is so gorgeous out here, the water is so calm, there's nothing like the waters of Kauai,
I'm telling you.
Like it is just like a, it's like a pool out here, we're just skipping across the top.
What did you say you wanted to see?
I'll see a whale shark.
We'll have to get very lucky to see a whale shark today but we're hoping, we're really
hoping.
But for now we're just enjoying the view until we have to fully gear up and hop in the water.
So we just made it to Molokini, it's right behind me and we're going to start gearing
up.
A lot of boats here.
A lot of boats.
You can see the crater under the water here, it goes all the way around.
You're as responsible in diving, especially in a marine reserve, so no touching, no taking
anything, go to watch your buoyancy.
Woo!
Alright so we're up from our first dive and look it, it's the back of Molokini.
We saw a shark!
We did see a shark, we saw two white tip reef sharks underneath a little ledge, it was awesome.
We saw two octopuses and I talked to the whales so it was pretty cool, we had a nice little
conversation.
So what do you think about diving out here?
Oh it's wonderful, it's a bit cold.
These views are pretty crazy though, it's beautiful.
Bye!
So after World War II they actually used Molokini as target practice so you can see where they
shot the machine guns.
The defog looks really good.
Thank you.
And here we are back side of Molokini crater, time to go down.
Regulator's in.
That second dive was so awesome.
I definitely liked that second dive better, you get to really see the wall and all the
amazing creatures that live in that wall.
The topography alone is crazy, it's just a sheer drop off to hundreds and hundreds of
feet.
And we were very lucky, we were treated to some of the last whales that must be on Maui
on our way back, we saw them all from the distance.
We want to give a big shout out to Maui Dive Shop for hosting us today, it was absolutely
an incredible experience, they were so kind, so nice, so helpful, and gave us a lot of
good food.
That's right, they fed us very well today.
Alright, our hour ride back has just finished and with Molokini way way off in the distance,
our dive day is over.
