A Tudor House Surrounded By Dreamy English Cottage Gardens. Smallhythe Place | 4K Natural Sounds
Join me for a peaceful June wander through the beautiful cottage garden at Smallhythe Place in Kent, one of the most enchanting Tudor buildings in the Weald.
This atmospheric property is a remarkable Wealden hall house dating from the late 15th century, its timber-framed walls and ancient character providing the perfect backdrop for a garden that feels deeply rooted in the English countryside. In June, the garden reaches one of its most beautiful moments of the year, with roses, cottage garden perennials and wildflowers creating a tapestry of colour around the historic buildings.
Our walk begins at the cottage entrance, where the much-loved 'Phyllis Bide' rambling roses cascade over the doorway in a cloud of soft pink blooms. From there, we explore the heart of the cottage garden, where old-fashioned roses mingle with herbaceous borders, creating the romantic planting style that defines an English cottage garden at its summer peak.
Along the way, you'll find plenty of flower close-ups, capturing the delicate details of individual blooms, petals and pollinators. This is a slow and immersive garden tour, allowing you to appreciate both the wider garden scenes and the smaller moments that are so easily missed.
Continuing through the grounds, we visit the historic thatched barn, now transformed into a theatre, a unique feature that reflects Smallhythe Place's connection to the celebrated Victorian actress Ellen Terry. The surrounding borders are filled with seasonal colour, soft textures and naturalistic planting that complement the historic buildings.
The walk then takes us around the outbuildings and onward into the wildflower meadow, where grasses and native flowers sway in the June breeze. Here the garden feels more open and connected to the wider landscape of the Kent countryside.
From the meadow, we make our way towards the charming cottage beyond the old well, passing through some of the garden's most picturesque corners before reaching the long rose pergola. In June, this spectacular feature is clothed in climbing roses, creating a fragrant tunnel of blooms and one of the garden's most memorable views.
Throughout the video, there is no music and no narration, just the natural sounds of the garden. Listen to the birdsong drifting through the trees, the rustle of leaves and the strong summer breeze moving through the borders and meadow grasses. It is an opportunity to slow down, wander at a gentle pace and experience the garden much as you would during a quiet visit.
If you enjoy English cottage gardens, historic houses, seasonal flowers, and peaceful countryside walks, I hope you'll enjoy spending some time at Smallhythe Place in June.
Thank you for watching.
