Before Juneteenth became a federal holiday, before brands and supermarkets started acknowledging it, Black families were already marking freedom through food, memory, church gatherings, family reunions, park cookouts, and red drinks on the table. Big Mama did not need a calendar announcement to know what the day meant.
Big Mama’s Juneteenth table was not fancy. It was smoky, red, sweet, loud, and full of memory. Every dish had a reason. Some celebrated freedom. Some remembered survival. Some just made sure everybody left full.
