Claude Monet is the archetypal Impressionist artist, and this art documentary tells his biography and life story.
His oil paintings and landscape paintings possess a spontaneity that fuses the act of seeing with paint, light and colour. But this apparent naturalness was hard won. Monet's early years in 19th century France were marked by tribulation and setback, and it would take him many years to earn a comfortable living as a French painter.
Inspired by his early mentor Eugène Boudin, and forging friendships with fellow artists Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Alfred Sisley, Monet helped shape a radical new movement. Rejected by the Paris Salon,, he borrowed money incessantly and it was decades before his reputation met with substantial acclaim within the French art scene.
This film tells Monet's story. From the waters of Le Havre where he grew up, to the banks of the Seine River, to the lush gardens of Giverny where he made his iconic Water Lilies — Nymphéas series a radical subject matter in modern art, it traces the years of dedication and Impressionism behind one of the greatest careers in art history and European art.
