Trump Signs Downsized AI Order, Creating Voluntary Reviewing Process

President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a scaled back executive order that seeks to address the cybersecurity threats of artificial intelligence. The order sets up a voluntary framework with AI developers so they can submit their powerful new models to a voluntary government review 30 days before releasing the products to the public. The reviewing process must follow appropriate confidentiality, cybersecurity, insider risk, and intellectual property protection, use, and non-disclosure requirements, reads the order. The president emphasized that the order doesn't start a licensing process. Nothing in this section shall be construed to authorize the creation of a mandatory governmental licensing, preclearance, or permitting requirement for the development, publication, release, or distribution of new AI models, including frontier models, it says.
