I want to talk to you today about the relationships in our lives, because there's a sobering truth
that I've seen woven throughout scripture. God often sends people into our lives
as assignments. They're not accidents. They're not always easy. They may stretch us,
confront us, refine us. And yet too often, leaders reject the very people that God has assigned to
them. And followers struggle to stay connected without being crushed. The tension's not new.
It's ancient. It's human. It's deeply spiritual. And when we examine scripture, we don't just
see isolated stories. We see patterns of relationship, alignment, rejection,
restoration, and divine purpose. Consider Saul and David. What this relationship could have been
is powerful to imagine. Saul, the first king of Israel, had the opportunity to mentor David,
the very man God had chosen to succeed him. He could have poured wisdom into him,
affirmed him, and transitioned leadership with dignity and grace. David honored Saul as king,
even when Saul's behavior was unstable and hostile. But instead of partnership,
their relationship became marked by jealousy, suspicion, and rejection.
When David defeated Goliath, the women sang, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his
ten thousands. Instead of celebrating, because it was a win for him too, instead of celebrating,
Saul internalized comparison. The scripture says, so Saul eyed David from that day forward.
That word, eyed, reveals a shift. Saul no longer saw David clearly. He viewed him through the lens
of insecurity. The spirit at work was jealousy, fear of replacement, threatened identity.
Saul was fighting the lie that someone else's calling diminished his own.
Meanwhile, David was fighting to maintain honor under pressure. Even when given opportunities
to kill Saul, David refused. And David's life teaches us that even when leadership mishandles
you, you don't have to mishandle your calling. Look at the relationship between Elijah and
Elisha. It was powerful, but it was not without tension either. There was testing and moments that
could have felt like rejection. As Elijah neared the end of his earthly ministry, he repeatedly
told Elisha to stay behind while he continued forward to places like Bethel, Jericho, and Jordan.
In 2 Kings 2 verse 2, Elijah said, stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me on to Bethel.
Yet Elisha responded, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.
This exchange happened multiple times, creating an emotional and spiritual tension between them.
On the surface, Elijah's words could sound dismissive, almost as if he were pushing
Elisha away or trying to separate from him. And Elisha could have interpreted those moments as
rejection, as discouragement, as proof that he was unwanted. But deeper than rejection,
maybe there was testing. Maybe Elijah was exposing whether Elisha's connection was casual
or covenant, emotion or purpose. Elisha had to fight the mindset of offense, insecurity,
discouragement. He had to discern that persistence was required for the mantle attached to his life.
Even when Elijah later asked him, ask, what may I do for you before I'm taken away from you?
2 Kings 2 verse 9, there is still tension in the moment because Elisha's request for a double
portion was bold and it was weighty. Elijah even responded, you have asked a hard thing.
That statement reveals the seriousness of what Elisha desired. Their relationship teaches us
that divine relationships are not always emotionally comfortable. Sometimes leaders
test distance and followers have to discern whether they're being rejected or refined.
Sometimes what feels like pushing away is actually preparation for promotion.
Elisha's refusal to disconnect became the very thing that positioned him to receive impartation.
Then there's Ruth and Naomi. They present a different dynamic, one shaped by grief
and restoration. Naomi had experienced devastating loss, her husband, her sons,
her stability and her pain. It clouded her perception. What this relationship could have
become was distance and isolation. Naomi even urged Ruth to leave saying, look,
your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods. Return after your sister-in-law.
But Ruth made a covenant decision responding, entreat me not to leave you or to turn back
from following after you. For wherever you go, I will go. And wherever you lodge, I will lodge.
Your people shall be my people. And your God, my God, where you die, I will die.
And there will I be buried. Ruth chose connection. Even when Naomi was wounded
and unable to fully recognize her value, Naomi's mindset was shaped by grief and
bitterness while Ruth embodied loyalty and faith. Over time, Naomi's vision was restored
and she guided Ruth into her destiny, ultimately positioning her in the lineage of Jesus.
This relationship reminds us that sometimes leaders don't reject out of malice, but out of
pain. And sometimes followers, they stay not because it's easy, but because it's ordained.
Another powerful example is Moses and Joshua, which shows what happens when leadership embraces
succession rather than resisting it. Moses could have clung to control or he could have feared
being replaced, but instead he publicly affirmed Joshua. The Lord instructed Moses to take Joshua
with him and lay his hand on him and give some of his authority to him. Moses recognized Joshua
as a man filled with the spirit and he willingly transferred authority. His mindset was secure
and obedient. He focused on legacy rather than control. Joshua, in turn, he demonstrated
faithfulness and servanthood, having walked closely with Moses before stepping into leadership.
This relationship illustrates the beauty of alignment. It shows what can happen when leaders
are secure and followers are patient. What all these relationships reveal is that both leaders
and followers are engaged in internal battles of their own. Leaders often wrestle with fear of
replacement, insecurity about identity, pride that resists correction, and often there's unresolved
pain that distorts their perception. Followers, on the other hand, often wrestle with offense or
discouragement, the temptation to disconnect prematurely, and bitterness when they're
mistreated. When these mindsets go unchecked, the relationship suffers and both sides are impacted.
So then, what should be done? Leaders must learn to recognize who God has sent.
Not every assignment will arrive in familiar or comfortable packaging. However, rejecting people
may mean resisting God's plan. Followers must remain connected where God has assigned them,
but not at the cost of their identity or their well-being. There's a difference between endurance
and abuse. Honor doesn't mean enabling dysfunction. It means maintaining the right posture while
seeking God's wisdom. Prayer then becomes the bridge where relationships feel strained. Instead
of reacting in frustration, followers are called to intercede, to see the humanity and the frailty
of their leaders, and to lift them up before God. Likewise, leaders must seek God's wisdom
to shepherd well and not allow insecurity or pride to sabotage divine relationships.
Now, with this wisdom and this insight, let's go to God in prayer. Because whether we're leading or
following, we need the Holy Spirit to help us stay in tune with the assignment that he has on our lives.
Father, in the name of Jesus, we come before you with humble hearts, acknowledging that every
relationship you ordain carries purpose. Lord, we lift up every leader listening right now and ask
that you search their hearts. Remove every trace of insecurity, jealousy, pride, and fear. Help them not
to reject the very people that you've assigned to them. Your word says, if any of you lacks wisdom,
let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
James 1 verse 5. So we ask for wisdom. Give leaders discernment to recognize destiny
when it stands before them. Give them humility to nurture, guide, and release rather than control
or reject. And Father, we lift up every son, daughter, mentee, and follower. Strengthen their
hearts to remain where you have assigned them, but not at the cost of their identity, their dignity,
or their safety. Your word declares, and let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season
we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Galatians 6 verse 9. Father, when they feel overlooked,
remind them they are seen. When they feel rejected, remind them that they're chosen.
When they feel weary, remind them that they're being prepared. Give them discernment to know
the difference between divine stretching and harmful environments. Teach them to pray, Lord.
Even when misunderstood, teach them to intercede. Even when they're hurt, teach them to lift their
leaders before you. Your word says, and the Lord restored Job's losses when he prayed for his
friends. Job 42 verse 10. Father, let there be restoration through intercession. Help them to
see the frailty of those leading them, not to dishonor them, but to cover them in prayer.
Father, we declare alignment where there has been rejection, clarity where there has been confusion,
and restoration where there has been distance. Let every leader embrace their assignment,
and every follower walk in wisdom and strength. Above all, let your will be done,
in every relationship that you have ordained. Dear Lord, the Savior of the world, take my heart,
shape it, mold it, transform it. I pray for a change to take place in my life. And God,
I pray for a change to take place in the lives of each and every believer who's listening right now.
Let there be change that takes place inwardly. Let there be a transformation when it comes to
our thought lives and our intentions and our motives. And Father, if there is someone who
has not received you, change their lives drastically and dramatically in the name of
Jesus. King Jesus, help us regarding our previous way of life. Help us to put off the old self.
Help us to completely discard our former nature. Help us to do away with this flesh,
which is being corrupted through deceitful desires. Hear our prayer, Lord God. May your
mercy and grace fall on us, so that we may be continually renewed in the spirit.
Give us a fresh, untarnished mental and spiritual attitude. Help us, Master, to put on the new self,
the regenerated and renewed nature that comes only through your strength.
God, help us to chase after, to seek after righteousness and holiness.
Your word says in Colossians 3 verses 5 through 8, put to death, therefore, what is earthly in you,
sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
On account of these, the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked when you were living
in them, but now you must put them all away. Anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk
from your mouth. Father, should anything that is not pleasing to you be found in my life,
Lord, I pray that you would remove it. In my heart, Lord Jesus, should there be anything
that is pulling me back, if I've put some passion, some ambition, or even some person as an idol,
I ask, King Jesus, that you would remove that thing. Remove whatever it is or whoever it is
that stands to oppose you in my life. Fill us, Lord. Fill us with the Holy Spirit.
May our lives be radically changed by you. May our lives be dramatically changed.
Shift whatever it is that needs to be shifted. Rearrange whatever you please in our lives.
Remove any lawlessness from our lives. Completely change us, Holy Father. May we be doers of the
word and not just hearers. Your word says in Galatians 5 verses 16 through 17,
but I say, walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit and the desires of the Spirit
are against the flesh. For these are opposed to each other to keep you from doing the things you
want to do. Give us the grace and strength, King Jesus, for us to win the fight between the flesh
and the Spirit. Help us to resist the desires of the flesh. Help us to reject the passions of the
flesh. But instead, I pray that I may receive more and more of the Holy Spirit. I pray that I
may serve your kingdom and produce good fruit. Fruit that is pleasing to you, Lord. Only you
are able to completely change me from the inside out. So, Lord Jesus, right now, I yield to you.
I yield to you once again and I glorify your precious name. Father, may I live my life
in a way that always expresses gratitude for your saving grace. God, right now, I thank you.
I thank you for being Lord over my life and I thank you for hearing this prayer.
In Jesus name I pray, amen and amen. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world
and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Do not be unequally
yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship
has light with darkness? The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil
and the good. And whatever you do, do it heartily as to the Lord and not to men,
knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. For you serve the Lord
Christ. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your
ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes. Fear the
Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh and strength to your bones. Am I now
trying to win the approval of human beings or of God? Or am I trying to please people?
If I were still trying to please people I would not be a servant of Christ.
Sell what you have and give alms. Provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old.
A treasure in the heavens that does not fail. Where no thief approaches nor moth destroys.
For where your treasure is there your heart will be also. I will give you a new heart
and put a new spirit within you. I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh
and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes
and you will keep my judgments and do them.
