Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Review - The Mandalorian makes his big screen debut. It's the first Star Wars movie in 7 years. Crazy to think! Unfortunately, it's not good. In fact, I kinda disliked almost every aspect of this movie.

Star Wars, The Mandalorian, and Grogu. The movie about nothing.
It's like Seinfeld, but not funny. Although to be fair, my audience chuckled pretty much every time baby Grogu ate something,
which was all the time. Let's get the obligatory disclaimer out of the way right away.
I'm a big fan of The Mandalorian season 1 and 2. Season 2 ended perfectly, the entire arc was completed,
then they cash-grabbed with the Book of Boba Fett, which was awful.
I don't think anybody was really craving to see the like
Jingle Fett clone from the shitty prequels back like as a older, schlubby, fat bounty hunter.
But that's what we got. And then The Mandalorian was wedged into that show as well for a couple episodes
before having one of the worst third seasons humanly imaginable.
So naturally, we wait a couple years, we pump the brakes, and then we turd out a season 4 in the form of a movie.
So how was it? Has to be better than season 3, right?
WRONG! No, I'm joking. It is actually a lot better than season 3, but does that mean it's good?
Well, I'm gonna answer that question right after the title card.
It's not, it's not good. It's um, it's pretty bad.
Here's the deal, The Mandalorian was only dark and gritty for like two episodes,
and then it turned more into a family fun adventure that I actually watched with my whole family.
We had a great time, we'd have our our Sunday morning breakfast and watch the 40-minute episodes,
and we laughed, we loved, we cried, we hugged. It was a very, very fun bonding experience.
And the last time, we were all on board with Star Wars.
My family did not return for season 3 of The Mandalorian.
They gave up at the Book of Boba Fett. I treaded it alone, and I even went out to this movie alone.
Actually, I did see it with another sad middle-aged man who grew up loving Star Wars,
and we were both just sitting there waiting to take a nap.
I ---- you not, there were three or four moments in this movie where I thought,
And the crazy part is, it's not because the movie's dull.
Quite the contrary. The movie's non-stop breakneck speed for two hours and
15 minutes or something like that. It's shorter on the Star Wars side, but it's still
plenty long for the non-story that it has provided.
You are gonna read, or you're gonna see a lot of reviews from people that say,
Hey, it's just a fluffy good time. It's not trying to set the world ablaze.
It's just a fun little family film. And to that I say,
It's not really that fun. It's really not. It's too long to be that fun.
Give me a 90-minute fun family film, not this two-hour shenanigans that they got going on.
There is just nothing here to work with.
Outside of Nostalgia Berries, where you see the AT-ATs walking along,
doing his best John Wick performance at times,
taking guys out while baby Grogu jumps onto his shoulder,
winks at the audience, and then eats his 45th piece of candy.
What is the fetish John Favresaurus Rex has with having this kid eat?
I'm pretty sure this was just chunks of Season 4 put into a movie, repurposed as a film script.
And if that's the case, I would not be surprised in the slightest, because holy crap,
it is just nonsense. I've never seen a movie structured so haphazardly.
And this is from a director who's done some phenomenal films.
Hell, he did the first couple seasons of The Mandalorian. He did Iron Man.
He did a criminally underrated film called Chef.
And he's definitely got something with the food,
because he's constantly showing people making ---- in this movie.
There's several cooks in the kitchen in this flick.
So let me give you a little bit of the plot, just as much as there is one.
We are with Mandalorian and Grogu, who, if you don't know them from the TV show,
well, then you don't know them in the movie.
Because unlike other films that come from a TV show,
this one doesn't bother to give you really any information as to who these two are.
All you will know, if you've never seen the show, is this guy's a cool bounty hunter.
He's got this alien sidekick for some reason.
They have a connection. Don't know what that is or why.
Don't know why he doesn't take off his helmet.
I mean, they'll give you a little intel on that way later in the film.
But I just could not believe that this movie truly did not care
about setting these characters up for new audiences.
And for those that watch the show, there's not a whole lot here that it harkens back to.
Season three, I'm pretty sure, is completely forgotten,
unless that blue alien pilot was from season three.
I truly can't remember. I don't know who that ******* guy was.
I think there's a few characters that are from the Clone Wars series
that people will probably enjoy, including a bounty hunter with a Kung Lao hat.
Other than that, I just really couldn't be bothered to know who these people were.
And when I say people, I mean CG monstrosities, but we'll get there in a second.
So when we meet the Mandalorian, he's off on a misadventure with Grogu.
They're shooting, they're blowing stuff up.
There's a tiny bit of the Force being used here.
Not much!
I gotta refrain from any spoilers.
I may do a spoiler review.
I should ask you to sub to the show, Adam Does Movies.
I post pretty much daily content here.
All things movies.
Sometimes they dip into TV shows and entertainment.
But really, for the most part, it's movie news, movie reviews,
rants, live streams, all around film.
So I'd appreciate it if you subbed, liked the video, commented.
Do all the stuff to get me in the algorithm.
I would appreciate it.
And I will do a spoiler video on this movie.
For now, though, I'll just say he's got a deck of cards,
literally a deck of cards of bad guys that he's going to go after.
And Sigourney Weaver, who's in this for all of four minutes,
points to a specific set of bad guys that he has to go talk to,
the Hutts, where he's going to do them a favor
so that they will give him intel about another bad guy.
He scratches their balls, they scratch his, as the expression goes.
They want him to retrieve another Hutt who's super jacked.
He's like Dwayne the Rock Johnson as a Hutt.
I think his name is Rhoda, and he's played by Jeremy Allen White.
But I'm going to call him Dwayne the Hutt Johnson moving forward.
Yeah, that's pretty much the entire plot of the film.
Mandalorian's going to go after this Dwayne the Hutt Johnson.
There's going to be some mystery revealed.
And then the rest of it's basically just, you know,
jumping from planet to planet, trying to stay alive and go after, you know, whatever.
There is no tension in this movie.
There's no real stakes in this movie.
There's no real sense of urgency in this film,
outside of a scene very late in the game that's...
Okay, things finally slow down a little bit.
Grogu gets to do some stuff.
But overall, this is just such a non-feeling film.
And I think the reason why there's such a lack of emotion or anything at all
is because you're looking at animated characters 24-7,
except for the Mandalorian, who's in a mask the whole time and has no emotion at all.
So you're just watching robots.
It's essentially like you're watching a two-hour Let's Play from someone on a live stream.
And it's not a very particularly interesting game.
So you'd rather be playing it.
I actually was thinking the whole time this movie was going,
this would make for a pretty badass video game.
Planet hopping as a Mandalorian.
You got your deck of cards.
You're going after different characters.
That would be fun.
That's not what this is, though.
It's just one card that he's trying to find.
And unfortunately, a large chunk of this movie is focused on Dwayne the Hutt Johnson,
who looks like ----.
This is such an abomination of a character design.
Truly one of the worst character designs in Star Wars I've ever seen.
First off, Jabba the Hutt, he's fat as ****.
He's not a healthy-looking dude.
And every Hutt we've seen since is just a big sluggish thing.
Except for this Rhoda character who's got this bizarre physique
because he's been hitting the gym, hitting the whey protein,
hitting the roids, probably.
And on top of him just having a terrible design, the CG is so bad.
I understand this movie was made on the cheap for a Star Wars film.
It was like $165 million.
I imagine it's going to make that money back in some change.
It's probably going to do pretty well.
Maybe half a billion dollars total revenue.
Maybe $600 million.
I don't know how much appeal the cute little baby Yoda thing has anymore.
I'm a sucker for baby Yoda.
I know it's not Yoda.
Little Grogu.
I hate the name Grogu.
It's stupid.
He is very cute in this film.
He's a cutesy little thing.
I like that it's still a puppet for the most part.
Jim Henson's crew is really going to work here.
There's lots of puppetry going on.
There is practical effects.
But holy ----, anytime we have CG on display, it is nightmare fuel.
And there are lots of huts in this film.
At one point, it's a freaking orgy of blobbish CG clashing into each other.
You don't know what's a head, what's a penis, what's a slug for a butt.
You don't know.
It's just a ball of grossness rolling around.
It is miserable on the eyes.
I mentioned there's a lot of action.
So people will be like, I don't really care if there's much of a story.
I just like The Mandalorian show.
It's nice to see it on the big screen.
Fair.
More power to you.
I was actually looking forward to this movie.
I've said so in multiple live streams and different videos.
I was excited for this.
I didn't expect it to be some grand Star Wars thing that was going to lead to a massive revelation.
What I did expect was a competently structured film with a decent storyline that actually
pulled me in, tugged at the heartstrings a little bit.
We do have a father-son sort of a companionship here, a relationship between these two.
It would have been nice if they could have done something a little bit more than the bare minimum.
Again, Grogu is just stuffing his face constantly.
And there was audience members just eating it up too.
He ate it.
He ate another one.
I saw that for three seasons already.
There's just nothing more to the character.
And it sucks because there should be.
And the Mandalorian, my God, you talk about just the most blank slate character imaginable.
There is nothing to him at all.
I get the feeling they were trying to make it John Wick, where he says very little.
There's a ton of action.
But the difference is John Wick does build on the lore.
There is interesting stuff going on.
There's a bunch of cool characters he interacts with.
There are real people, real stunt work.
So it's very impressive to watch.
In this, you have a dude in a costume fighting a bunch of bullshit on the screen.
It's not even pleasant to look at 90% of the time.
And having a bunch of action for the sake of having action doesn't mean anything either if it's so bland.
There is not a lot of memorable action scenes outside of that initial one
when we're introduced to the character again.
I enjoyed that.
The first 10 or 15 minutes I was on board.
This is a very cool reintroduction to our hero.
There's some jokes thrown in.
It's very Marvel-ish, but that's okay.
I'm into that.
That's fine.
But once that first job is introduced and they have to go to the huts, it's over.
It just gets so bad.
The whole Coliseum thing, which felt, again, like it was straight out of Thor Ragnarok,
was so been there, done that.
But then it just keeps going.
It's like it doesn't end at the Coliseum.
There's different monsters running around.
They all look like ----.
And it was at this point that the eyes were starting to droop.
And I thought, oh my god, I could just drift away right now.
And I know I would miss out on nothing at all.
Can you have a good time with this one?
Sure, yeah, of course.
There's people in the audience that clearly were having a good time with it.
There's cutesy little jokes here and there.
It's all just so disposable.
The biggest compliment I can give it is also going to be a negative at the same time.
The brilliant Mandalorian score composed by Ludwig Goransson is on full display.
I love the song so much.
But then on the negative side of things, all the rest of the songs made for the movie are odd,
out of place, feel almost like they were generated by, you know, I don't want to be
cliche, but they sound almost like AI generated.
They're just so odd.
All right, I think I complained enough about this one.
If you're a family thinking about taking the kids out, yeah, I mean, it's
nonstop stuff going on, just absolute shenanigans from front to back.
So they're probably not going to be bored by any of it.
Rogu is very cute, as promised.
The Mandalorian does a lot of killing.
It's very PG action outside of one or two somewhat violent moments I wasn't expecting.
But for the most part, this is very safe to bring families to.
There's no alien nudity or milking of any kind.
So you're safe to go into this one with the kids.
But with the price of movie tickets, I think you're a lot smarter to just save your money
and watch this thing on Disney Plus in a couple months.
Well, there you have it.
My thoughts on The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Unfortunately, it was not the grand sendoff I thought it would be for these two.
Thankfully, it pretty much does ignore season three of the show.
So you could start it up after season two ended.
It still wouldn't make any sense, though.
If you've seen the end of season two, you would still be like, why is he back with Mandalorian?
This makes no sense.
So overall, yeah, just not a fan.
All right, let me know your thoughts.
