This specific lesson focuses on the one-handed backhand topspin dink cross-court, a deceptive shot that is less common than the forehand topspin dink and can effectively disrupt an opponent's rhythm.
hi welcome to primetime pickleball my name is nicole havlicek in this advanced backhand
upgrade series we're going to talk about three new types of advanced backhand shots that you can add
to your arsenal whatever level you're playing at right now you should always be learning new
things and putting new shots in your tool bag so that you can keep your opponents guessing
because you always have different things to throw at them even jordan and i
as five-o-level players are still today and will always be learning from other players
as well as experimenting and being innovative to learn new shots and skills
that will give us a competitive edge on the court that's what you should be doing too
and that's what this series is all about in this video we'll be covering shot number one
of the series the one-handed backhand topspin dink cross court please see the description below for
links to the videos on shots number 2 and 3 of this backhand upgrade series okay let's get to
it missing one of our videos is like missing an easy put away don't let that be you subscribe now
all right so this first shot i'm really starting to like a lot and this is the backhand topspin
dink all right from odd side to outside all right so this thing is really effective because
a lot of people don't see a top spin coming from this side all right a lot of players will go for
hand to forehand hitting in those top spin dinks but you don't see a lot of topspin from
the backhand side so this is something that i've been working on and i'm noticing it that it could
give your opponents a lot of trouble alright so i'm just going to kind of show you a few shots
[Music]
the backhand topspin dink shot execution we'll start by covering the grip for the backhand top
spin dink it would likely be easiest to execute this shot out of an eastern backhand grip however
here and most often jordan is executing this shot out of a continental grip for a few key reasons
first he may intend to hit a topspin cross-court dink based on his early assessment of the incoming
ball but at the last moment he sees that it will be very tough and he will have a later
contact than he planned or he would prefer to hit a dink volley for a top spin dink
you need to have a well in front contact it's extremely difficult to hit with a later contact
if he's in a continental grip then he can much more easily make a quick decision to hit a slight
chip dink chip meaning with a bit of underspin or a flat dink or a dink volley if you were to
make this last moment decision while holding an eastern backhand grip then the chip dink flat
dink or volley dink would become harder to execute as it puts your paddle in a slightly more closed
position and if you're already slightly later on your contact than you would like to be then
turning the paddle more open will be tough using an eastern backhand grip in addition to that since
a forehand dink as well as blocks on the forehand and backhand side are most often hit out of a
continental grip he will have to do overall far less grip switching in exchanges up at the line
which leads to more stable dinking and blocking overall okay let's move into the swing execution

all right so as you saw right there i do still need a lot of practice but this is a shot that i'm
currently working on as you can see that it really ascends and descends really quickly and it bounces
and takes off as that dink hits the ground so to a opponent's backhand this is a really tough shot so
yeah i hope this video was um just an interesting one and something really cool you know me as a 5-0
player i'm still constantly learning watching film watching the top pros and and learning
a lot from them and just little things i could pick up from them okay so whatever level you are
you always want to be pushing yourself to new heights learning new shots and putting new
weapons in your toolbox so that you can take on the court alright so thanks for watching
