Welcome to another episode of Gnomes and Chickmunks and today we're going to learn how to protect the environment. Do you guys like nature? Yeah! It's beautiful isn't it? One of the easiest ways to protect the environment is to recycle and here in Canada we have a really really good recycling program. Do you guys know the different bins we have? Three! Three, good! Yeah that's right we have three bins and do you guys know what colors they are? Blue bin, green bin and garbage bin. Yeah that's right. Do you guys know what each of the bins what you put in each of the bins? To put it really simply we have three different kinds of bins. We have blue, green and black and then to to keep it easy in your memory in the blue bin you put recycling and in the green bin you put the green is for like the earth so you put like food waste that stuff that decomposes. You can put things like apple cores and banana peels and like leaves that fell off the tree. These things the earth will take and turn back into soil so new things can grow and then in the black bin you put your garbage so you put like if you have a granola bar you have the crinkly wrapper you put that in the garbage can because that doesn't become earthed again. Yeah it's very simple recycling food that becomes soil and just everything else. Do you guys know what we put in the blue bin Emma? Yeah that's right and what else Ryan? Cardboard. Yeah David? Paper. Yeah that's right for recycling there's three main things you can put there you can put paper like you guys said plastic and also metal so paper is like printed paper like magazines and stuff and cardboard is also a kind of paper so you can recycle these and then for plastics any like plastic bottles like our water bottles that are empty you can put them in the recycling and also metal is like like you said cookie tins and also like aluminum trays but it's really really important that when you guys put your recycling in it has to be clean you have to make sure you wash your stuff before you recycle it otherwise it can't actually be recycled that's not very well known so you got to make sure it's clean before you recycle it so we do our part to Here I have some samples of stuff that we can recycle so for example this one here paper cup tray where would you guys put this? Recycle. Yeah that's right and then if we have something like this recycle recycle good and then if we have plastics like this no this oh yeah garbage so for plastics you can only put hard plastics in the recycling bin so that's like this is like soft so you can't recycle that if we have this apple and we ate the whole thing we only had the core where would we put yeah you got it Sarah something like this yeah recycle that's right and then this one oh actually this one's also trash so recycling is just things like bottles and things like you know those plastic clam it's called a clam container it's where you get your fruit and stuff and then it comes in a container that opens like this these you can recycle but cutlery and stuff have to go in the trash can do you guys know what happens to your recycling? They turn into new things yeah that's right so what they do is our recycling goes to a recycling center they have this whole complicated set of machines so they have like magnets and scanners and like conveyor belts and it goes to all these machines and it gets sorted and the recycling that's like very clean and usable will get like packaged up and turned into new stuff but if you have like cardboard that's like covered in food or it's dirty or it's not actually recyclable it actually gets wasted and then it goes into the landfill but landfills aren't good because they're like pollution and they're like really dirty and they harm the environment so we want to keep our recycling clean well sorted so that as much of it can get reused as possible and that's really good for the environment so for the organic they take that away and then if it's just organic there's like you mentioned the bugs bugs are really good because bugs and worms they go into the soil and they eat it and then once they eat our unwanted banana peels and apple cores it breaks down and it just becomes regular soil like this and then once you have black soil like this it's very good for plants and trees flowers and fruits and vegetables that we eat now we're going to make some arts and crafts with the gifts from nature so you guys ready to go on a treasure hunt for some pine cones yeah we're going to take our beautiful pine cones that you guys collected and we're going to turn them into amazing picture frames you guys ready yeah yeah and so once we decorate them we can show them to the gnomes and your parents and everybody's okay so what you're going to do is you're going to take this first and then we're going to take the sample so we have this beautiful picture of ryan here and then you're going to take your glue sticks and you're going to just take it and you're just going to basically go like this very satisfying and stick it on and then afterwards we have a lot of really pretty flowers and like little leaves and then you can just pick where you'd like to stick them like this for example and then have some flowers here and you can just stick them on and if you guys want to put the pine cone on here we have a hot glue gun but you got to be careful with it because it's hot so i'll be doing it for you and then you just choose where you want to so you take it and you go push it in and decorate it as much as you like what about this what is this oh yeah these you can take these as well you can put these put this underneath so it's not too stuck yet you can put it on you're going to block the other ones yeah so you can go like that and that's good okay so pine cones are the seeds of pine trees and the seeds get stored inside each of these little scales and here's a fun fact did you know actually pine cones they can close the pine tree can close the pine cone do you know why they do that is it like this one a little bit yeah that one's a little bit more closed is this one the open one yeah that's the more open one yeah so yeah that's a more closed one so pine trees close their pine cones when it's cold outside to protect the pine cone from the cold pine cones are really good because they can be used as a kind of medicine and they can they can be used to treat wounds because they're a little bit antibacterial which means they kill some bacteria pine trees are also very important because they create a lot of oxygen for us and as humans we breathe oxygen which is very important lift up your beautiful picture frames and show them to the camera
