Do you love the arias from Mozart's operas? And do you enjoy testing your knowledge of Mozart’s music? If the answer is yes, then this video is for you! It features five arias from Mozart's beloved operas "The Magic Flute" and "Don Giovanni." But there's a twist: The arias here aren't sung — instead, the oboe plays the melody, which makes it even trickier to guess which they are! The Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin performs under the direction of François Leleux, who also plays the solo oboe part. The concert took place on July 12, 2025, at the Kissinger Sommer in the Max-Littmann-Saal.

Have you made your guesses? Here are the answers:

ARIAS FROM THE MAGIC FLUTE, K. 620
(00:00) Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja (Aria of Papageno, Act I,2)
(02:05) Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön (Aria of Tamino, Act I,3)
(05:34) Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen (Aria of Papageno, Act II,20)
(08:39) Alles fühlt der Liebe Freuden (Aria of Monostratos, Act II,13)

ARIA FROM DON GIOVANNI, K. 527
(10:08) Non mi dir, bell’idol mio (Aria of Donna Anna, Act II,23)

With the vocal lines replaced by the oboe, this performance is certainly unique! The oboe has a remarkably pure, overtone-rich sound, which is why it traditionally provides the reference pitch for the entire orchestra as it tunes. At the same time, the tone of this woodwind instrument is both highly penetrating and extraordinarily versatile — it's capable of expressing a wide range of emotions in music. Against this backdrop, it is no surprise that countless works have been arranged for oboe. Nor is it surprising that the vibrance of the human voice can be conveyed particularly well by the instrument.

This video brings together a selection of Mozart’s masterful melodies "sung" by the oboe. Thanks to the instrument’s distinctive sound, Mozart’s brilliant compositions emerge with lightness and elegance. And there is another special touch: François Leleux performs both as solo oboist and as conductor of the orchestra at the same time.
