Watch Michele Mariotti conduct the choir and orchestra of the Teatro La Fenice in the famous chorus sung by the Hebrew slaves and part of Verdi's opera Nabucco.
At this point in the opera, the Hebrew slaves are in exile in Babylon, far from their homeland, mourning the loss of Jerusalem and longing for freedom. Coinciding with a period of Italian national awakening, the chorus resonated with contemporary audiences. Nabucco premiered on 9 March 1842 at La Scala in Milan, and its success marked Verdi’s breakthrough as an opera composer.
