The Moken’s Untold Story: Thailand’s Forgotten Maritime Tribe
For centuries, the Moken people have lived in harmony with the sea, sailing the waters between Thailand and Myanmar. Known as ""sea nomads,"" they once spent their entire lives aboard handcrafted wooden boats called kabang, drifting from island to island and living off what the ocean and land provide.
Though their lifestyle has evolved, the spirit of the sea still guides them. Today, many Moken families continue their semi-nomadic traditions—setting out for days or even weeks at a time, raising their children with the rhythms of the tide and the songs of the waves.
In a fast-changing world, the Moken stand out as a living testament to a way of life rooted in nature, freedom, and ancestral knowledge.
