Are you guys ready to make kites? Yeah! Have you guys ever flown a kite before? Yeah!
Oh where'd you guys fly it? In my front yard. Oh that sounds like a lot of fun.
Okay did you guys make your kites though or did you buy it from a store? We bought it from a store.
Well today we're all going to be making kites and we're going to be making them from this paper.
There's some interesting facts about the history of kites. So did you know kites actually originated
in ancient China? Ancient Chinese kites were made of silk and bamboo and the first person to make
a kite was the ancient Chinese philosopher Mozi and he built a little wooden bird and he attached
a string to it and it could fly. Isn't that amazing? Yeah yeah. Why are we doing them? Because it's fun.
Yeah it's fun and it's beautiful and it was actually really really useful too because
Chinese soldiers in ancient times would also use kites for all different kinds of things. They'd
use it to measure the wind, to measure distances and to send messages to each other. Most modern
kites today are usually made out of like plastic or paper. It's different from the ancient Chinese
ones. A lot of ancient Chinese people use kites for decoration too. Like in the Tang dynasty
they would take kites and they would paint all kinds of different pictures with different legends
on them or they make their kites into different shapes. I don't know if you've ever saw those
pictures of kites in like the shape of fish and the shape of dragons. Yeah it's really beautiful
and then they fly in the air and it's really really amazing. You could have like a square kite
like this and you could print the letter A on it and then you could have also diamond kite and then
the B on it. You could even take your kite today and write the letters you want on it. Kites have
an amazing history because they started off in China and then they started to go to other
countries and then Korea got them and Japan got them and then in 1200 Marco Polo, you guys all
know Marco Polo right? Super famous. Oh he was this Italian explorer and he was one of the first
westerners to go to China. So he went to China and then he brought back all of this amazing
culture from China to the west and one of the things he brought back was kites. He taught western
people how to make kites and then after that western people grew to love the colors and the
fun that kites could bring. And then kites also have useful purposes too. Like for example you can,
meteorologists began to measure the temperature with them. Like in modern times sometimes people
hang cameras onto kites and then you fly them up and you can get like really epic footage
from like angles people normally don't see. Let's make a kite. Okay so I'm gonna show you guys.
First you're gonna take this piece of paper and then you're gonna fold it in half like this.
Very pretty and clean fold. Good. And then like that. And then you try and so then we have this
side where the fold is and you try and find about like one quarter. So like this is about half
and then that's about a quarter. So this spot right here and then we're gonna take this loop
and do it on one side and then we're gonna loop the other side like this and then I'm
gonna take the stapler and I'm gonna staple it once here and I'm gonna staple it once
around there. So good. And that's it. We have a kite. Here we have a little tail that's gonna go
on the edge of the kite so that it has like a wee at the end. So you're gonna take this
and you're gonna carefully see it's like springy like this. You're gonna rip one and you're
basically you're going to make like W's. So this is ripped and then this one stays connected but
this one gets ripped. Yeah so you see that way it becomes like long. And then this one stays
connected and you rip that one. Oops good. And then that that one stays connected and then I
rip this one. And so then you just you have the fold here. There's like a crease here right.
Everybody can see? Everybody can see? Yeah. So this is gonna become like a long line and then
you're gonna put that right in the crease here and then we're gonna put one more staple. So
would you like to do the honor? Yeah just staple it close to the edge.
Good. Yeah and that way our tail won't fall out and you can like wee. Everybody can you guys all
hold out your kites for me? Oh nice. Looking good. Looking good. Looking good. If you guys haven't
written your names already make sure to write your names on it and you can also draw some beautiful
pictures like sun, clouds, whatever you like. Tomorrow we're going to be going to the central
islands and they have a beautiful beach there and we can run on the beach and fly our kites.
Does that sound good? Yeah. Yeah sounds good.
