Hula is Hawaii’s storytelling in motion—a sacred art form that blends graceful movements, rhythmic footwork, expressive hand gestures, facial expressions, and chant or song (oli or mele) to convey history, legends, emotions, nature, genealogy, and cultural values.

It is far more than entertainment; traditionally, hula preserved oral traditions, honored gods and chiefs, and connected people to the land, ocean, and ancestors before written language existed in Hawaii.

Core Elements of Storytelling and Expression in HulaHand and Arm Gestures: These are the primary storytellers. Specific movements depict words, ideas, or scenes from the accompanying chant/song. For example:Waving arms or hands can represent ocean waves or wind through palm trees.
