ART OF THE RENAISSANCE Sculpture Architecture
May 21, 2026
The 15th century in Florence opened up with a competition for the North Doors of the Florentine Baptistery, won by Lorenzo Ghiberti. The "loser," Filippo Brunelleschi, would go on to define the "vanishing point" perspective and to devise the method for constructing the "unbuildable" dome for the Florentine cathedral. Another artist, Donato di Niccolò, known to posterity as Donatello, will become the greatest sculptor the world had seen to date. Florence's artistic achievement in the early 15th was inimitable.
