EP6 | 5100 m, Ice & Sand Traps: Dropped 400 kg Bike—and a Rational Retreat
Day 3 from Shuanghu toward Qiangtang’s no-man’s-land: after a day-1 breakdown and day-2 full repair, I push deeper—meeting 8-m ice rivers, soft river-sand, and a 400+ kg fully-loaded bike. A low footfall tips the bike on glassy ice; I chisel for traction, strip luggage, and lift—again and again—until exhaustion at +5,000 m. Ahead lies a hundred-meter glacier and countless more. Without spare clutch plates, one slip could mean abandoning the bike and walking out. So I choose reason over bravado: mark the turnaround at 33°41′22″N, 88°28′53″E, re-pack, and exit carefully—because nothing costs more than a life. This episode features • Real glacier technique: clutch feathering, speed control, anti-slip judgment • Lifting a 400+ kg moto on ice; energy management at altitude • Soft-sand “mouse-on-a-pan” effect & clutch wear risks • Decision-making under fatigue, cold, and hunger—why turning back is progress
