Mirror Armor: Primitive or Genius?

Most armors try to cover as many gaps as possible, but this doesn't seem to be the case of the mirror armor. This armor often only has one large plate protecting the chest, and another protecting the back, leaving arms, legs, shoulders, sides, etc, open. Why is this the case? Was it just a primitive and easy to make armor, or was it done on purpose?
