Plato (c. 427–347 BC) was a preeminent ancient Greek philosopher, a student of Socrates, and the teacher of Aristotle. He was the founder of the Academy in Athens—the first institution of its kind in history. His teachings and core ideas can be summarized in three main points: The Theory of Ideas (Forms): The world is divided into two levels. The true world is the eternal and immutable realm of Ideas (perfect archetypes or concepts). The material world surrounding us is merely an illusion—an imperfect "shadow" of the world of Ideas. The Doctrine of the Soul: The soul is immortal; prior to a human's birth, it resides in the world of Ideas, and thus, all knowledge is essentially recollection. The soul consists of three parts: reason (head), will/spirit (chest), and appetite/desire (abdomen). The Ideal State: In his treatise *The Republic*, the philosopher described a society in which justice reigns supreme. In this state, governance is entrusted to philosophers (representing reason), defense is provided by warriors (representing will), and the production of goods is carried out by artisans and farmers (representing appetite).
