At first glance, it just looks like a normal calculator. But the deeper I went with this thing, the more ridiculous the possibilities became. What impressed me most is that it never feels like “magic tech”. It just feels invisible.
In this review, I go through what Quantum does, where I think it shines, the kind of performer who’ll get the most out of it, and why I think this, for me, is a powerful utility device for modern mentalism.
There’s also a live performance where you’ll see a spectator get absolutely destroyed by it.
Quantum can work standalone, with mini-apps, as a Bluetooth keyboard, or integrated with other Electricks devices like PeekSmith, Bond, SB Watch and more. It’s one of those rare products where the rabbit hole just keeps going. 🔗 Quantum by Electricks: https://electricks.info/product/quantum-calculator/
Steve Faulkner reviews the Quantum Calculator by Electrix, a specialized tool for mentalists. Designed to look like a cheap, inconspicuous device, it integrates with the Peaksmith app to perform forces, real-time peeks, and complex stacked routines. While powerful and versatile, it requires a learning curve and would benefit from better documentation and a more active user community.
Hello, my name is Steve Faulkner. This is a cheapo tatty calculator, or is it?
Before we carry on, like if you like it, subscribe to it if you want to subscribe to it,
share it if you want to share it, but importantly go to stevefaulkner.com forward slash newsletter
where you will receive updates of stuff I'm up to, including reviews that drop,
podcasts that get put out, and other things. Onlinemagic.co, my membership site, there you go,
go to them, have a look at it, but importantly get the newsletter because you ain't got to do
all them things. Right, this has taken me an awful long time, whenever I, this isn't an app,
no it is an app, however with tech it takes me a long time to review because I really do,
and I'm saying this for a reason, because somebody quite rightly kind of said, you know,
a lot of reviewers don't perform the stuff, so how do we know whether it's, you know, works in the
real world, and a lot of times I don't, because sometimes you don't need to, because the routine's
already out there, there's just different newer ways of doing them, and that is what this is.
So we're going to talk about numbers, and if you would have said this to me, I don't know,
five years ago, I said go away, I'm not doing anything with numbers, I was never interested
in added number stuff, it's a very different thing now, I've tried it out, I've done loads with
different kind of numerical routines, and believe me, again, like this, they are way better than you
think they are, just your basic routine can have meaning and premise built onto it, and
this can do that thing, but in a special way, because it doesn't look special, so at its most
basic, and it's most basic, you can force a number on this, instead of using a pad, or instead of
using your phone, and for some people that might be quite important, for various reasons, you may
already use your phone in a routine, you want something that does the same thing, but you don't
want it to look like a phone trick, or you may just want it to be really disarming, and look like a
cheap, old, not old, but cheap, inexpensive, which means the same thing, that does an awful lot, and
there is less suspicion with that, I genuinely believe that, right, not that you need it, if you
do it on your phone, it's still amazing, I close a show with a calculator routine on my phone,
but this kind of excites me, because it's brilliant to use, but it also, it just, you almost can't
believe that it does what it does, anyway, I'm not going to gush about it, you make your own mind up,
but I will tell you what it does, a bit, because it does a lot, and we'll be here too long, if I go
into all of it, the first thing, like I say, is the force, now, with that force, I can go up to a
table, and some of you are thinking, why would you go up to a table with that, well, maybe you
wouldn't, if you're doing like a big table of parlour show, and you can make a joke out of it,
look at my, you know, little calculator, whatever, you know, I'd be quite happy doing that, but I
know a lot of you wouldn't, if you're more serious than I am, however, great for stage, and that's
your own decision, but I can go up with this, no app, no anything, on the fly, decide what number
I want to force, there might be a number on the table, or they can see a number somewhere, or on
the menu, on the bottom, one of the pages of the menu, anything, and I can go, look, now it's going
to force that, I hand it around, do the add a number routine, everybody puts their numbers in, and it
comes to that, the last one you did was four, four, five, five, I want to hit equals, let's have a look
at the number, I don't mean, if anybody else would have done this, this wouldn't have worked, I don't
think, does that number mean anything to you? You bastard!
And that is at its most fundamental, and when we go into different things that a piece of
tech does, it's easy to forget how impressive it's, the first effects are that you learn, and I think
it is, I mean that's brilliant, if you just did that, I'd be like, that is a very cool thing,
it looks like you couldn't do such a thing, but there are more things, that kind of effect, and the
fact you can peak anything from this, on your phone, on a peaksmith, on your apple watch, or
numerous devices, okay, without thinking too much, put three digits in the calculator,
okay, I think this is going to work, that was nine, five, six, right, and that is very cool, isn't it?
But it can go the other way, you can also peak things on here, that could come from other devices,
I won't go into the detail of it, but if you use tech a lot, it's APIs, I mean it's obviously
limited, because you're using certain characters on here, but you can get numbers from other apps,
like inject, to go into the peaksmith app, and come into this, and that could be a peak device,
you may be thinking why we don't want to do that, well that's your job, and that's kind of the
the essence of what this is, what they've done is, instead of giving you loads of set routines,
electrics have kind of gone right, it does all this kind of really cool stuff, yes those quick
tricks can be great, or you can build on them once you start playing with it, and that's a really
important thing, the reason I've been procrastinating so much about reviewing this, is because I really
couldn't get a handle on how I was going to describe kind of what it did, and you'll be
feeling that probably, because there's so many ways to go with this, but that is kind of the point,
you've got the force, you've got the things, and all that, but when you start linking it
with a peaksmith app, and then branching out from that to other apps, it's kind of endless,
basically it is an input device, that you can use to pick the input, the result of the input,
the sums, or the result of, you can see there as they're coming up on a peaksmith, or your watch,
or they do the sum and you just see the end result, or more, but it's also a receiver for
some things, so you could have two of these, and whatever someone is typing on that, you are seeing
on another one, now you may again be thinking, well that's going to be pretty obvious, because
they're just going to think it's transmitting stuff, but that again is the point, for a lay
person when they see that, they're not, I really genuinely don't think that's going to be an issue,
I even think you could be holding your phone and looking at it, pretending the type thing
into a calculator, and just be watching what's coming up, and they just wouldn't have a clue,
just be, and now if you have two phones they might do, with someone like this they won't,
so that is kind of the power of this, it's kind of, it's so natural looking,
that you could get away with way more than if you were doing it on a phone, it also gets a
bit more complicated, we have what's built into this, I think there are six, five or six
mini apps, and all that really means is the inbuilt effects, that can be done in conjunction
with the Peaksmith or not, but they're in that, and you can even start them off on here, and it's
not a very complex thing to do that, and when I say it gets more complicated, it sounds more
complicated, but actually it's pretty easy, once you again go into the Peaksmith app,
and once it's all linked up, it all becomes a bit clearer, you can have a routine, where you
hand it to someone, and they put a two digit number in, or four digit number, that number,
when they press plus, can be fired off to an app, or your watch, and that four digit number,
or whatever comes up as a time, after pressing plus, you can give it to someone else, they can
do a two digit number, that two digit number can create a magic square, which you can see on your
watch, for the second part of the routine, then the third person could do a four digit number,
and that could get a pi revelation, so you see what I'm seeing, you can start stacking
different routines, within one routine, and creating a longer piece, I hope this is making
sense, if you don't do your tech, and you don't know what part, it's not, so sorry about that,
but you can ask questions, and I'll try and clarify, probably in a different review,
but hopefully you're getting the point, it just does anything, you kind of want to do in numbers,
in a magic trick, that you'd usually do with a calculator, or something else, you can do it on
that, right? I hope that makes sense, it kind of sounds all over the place, doesn't it? This review
is brought to you by our sponsor, AbraCircle, now if you're like me, you get hundreds of emails
every month, telling you, you should get your website designed by someone you've never met,
and you're never likely to meet, this is different, AbraCircle provide custom made,
coded websites, for magicians, and performers, and the guy who runs the whole thing, is a magician
himself, so he really understands what we need, AbraCircle's websites are coded from the ground
up, no templates, no drag and drop, and they'll provide support throughout the process, and
afterwards, it can be really expensive to get websites designed, but you're going to be very
surprised at the pricing, and it's really worth it, this is how clients are going to find you,
and they know when you've chucked something together at home, believe me, like I've done
many times in the past, getting a website design can be so expensive, but I think you're going to
be very surprised at how fair the pricing is, whatever level you're at, and if you're a real
magic viewer, you get even more of a discount, so check out AbraCircle, go to the links below,
and thanks to them for sponsoring this review, right, let's get on with it, is it brilliant,
perfect, everybody should get one, no, because it suits a certain type of performer, and it's a
stage performer, but not any stage performer, it's really got to suit your character, you might be
fine getting a phone out, and so many of us do it, thanks to Impidgin, and it's changed the lives of
many performers, and given a close to a show to many performers, including myself, which is no
bad thing, but this doesn't do that trick, the date and time, you know, at the end, you've got
the exact date, the exact time of how it is right now, and they're saying that it might do at some
point, you know, in with the blessing of it, or whatever, but I'm kind of okay with it not doing
that, I don't think we need just a bit of kit that does the same thing as other things, yes it's
different because of the way it looks, I think actually it's good that it kind of doesn't just
hand us everything, it gives us, it does, and we can then come up with things that mean something
to us, and as I said at the beginning, mean something to our spectators, and we can put so
much meaning on numbers with not really much thought, but with a lot of thought, it can become
something really special. You can create your own apps as well, there's a MagiScript, it's a
coding language, is that how you say it, for magicians, that isn't very complex, if you're a
little bit techy apparently, so you can start creating your own things and loading them into
this, it's rechargeable, it lasts eight hours I think, it takes one or two hours to charge,
once you get the hang of it, it is pretty simple, but there is a learning curve, and I think mostly
that is to do with the fact that with tech, we sometimes think we get it, it does a thing,
and we forget that like a card trick, or a coin trick, or any routine, we should sit with it for
a day, or two, or three, or four, to really get it into our minds and brains, so we can start
improvising and playing with it, and this is going to take a bit of time, for some of you,
if you're like me, I really have had to spend a while with this, for me to almost realise how
simple and easy it is, if you see what I mean, it seems to be really well made, it's not lost
connection once, I've tested it, and tested, and tested, I've spent so much time with it,
now I haven't got performance footage, but believe me, I know it's going to work,
because those routines always work, the Peaksmith app, by the way, if you're wondering, is available
on Android and iPhone, and you can, it's completely free, and you can do an awful lot with it, and what
they're starting to do with Electrics now, is bring it all together, so we had Cubesmith, and Peaksmith,
and Timesmith, from Benkersmith, and Andrashev, who then became Electrics, and expanded,
and the Family Smith, don't know why I said that, but now, they're bringing it all into the
Peaksmith app, really, over time, and that's going to be the kind of hub to all these things,
all their devices, and other devices, and other bits of software, through API,
and I think, I'm kind of excited to see this, and to see something I've never really used before,
I know there have been calculators before, quite well-known ones, I don't know much about them,
but I know they kind of paved the way for this, and of course, Toxic Plasma, Keen Pigeon, is,
like I said, we're standing on the shoulders of giants, and they acknowledge that in all the
documentation, the documentation is great, it needs, I think it needs a little bit of more
step-by-step, it does at the beginning, it goes, go off and try this, and then, but then after that,
for me, it took me a while to get my head around it, and there's still bits I don't quite understand,
I think it could be a little bit more, but the videos are quite quick, and they're silent,
and it just shows you a quick thing they're doing, I kind of want something to go, right,
you could do this, and if you type in this, what that means is, you know, a bit more explanation,
I'm sure it's coming, and I'm sure it probably is there somewhere, but it wasn't obvious to me,
and the Facebook page, it's starting to get a bit busier, but it's a little bit,
like I kind of want, I'm waiting for that, those ideas to come forward, until people start sharing
what they're doing, not for us to copy, but for to inspire us, and give us ideas, so I hope that
makes sense, again, Toby, thank you to Toby Davis for editing this, and you know, and he's got a
bit of a job on here, sorry, but hopefully you've got the basic idea, and this can be ongoing,
if you've got any questions, I'm sure I've missed out so much, but it's a really cool calculator,
it does all those tricks, in a thing that looks like it can't do that, there you go, put that as
a quote, good luck, we're getting a quote out of this, but there it is, Quantum Calculator
by Electrix, any questions, and I'm sure you have many, you know what to do.
