
The Law That Only Exists on Paper — Alisa's Mom (Part 2)
Two friends of mine attended China's top journalism and law schools. Both told me their fields were "wrong choices" — there is no free press or rule of law there. Alisa's mom's case illustrates this perfectly.
Of the 17 Falun Gong practitioners arrested on April 15th, one remains missing. Six were released the same day — thanks to everyone who called the police. Nine were held under administrative detention for 15 days: three were then released, three sent to a brainwashing center, and three — including Alisa's mom — are now under criminal detention.
Though China’s own constitution guarantees freedom of speech and religious belief, all authorities actually wants is Alisa's mom renounce Falun Gong and silencing her advocacy.
For Alisa's mom, the law only exists on paper.
