In August 2024, the Crew Dragon Endeavour reached what should have been its final resting place. Under original NASA safety regulations, its fifth splashdown marked the hard limit of its flight life, transforming the world’s most storied private spacecraft into a potential museum piece. Yet, one year later, Endeavour defied retirement, docking at the ISS for a historic sixth mission.

This was no mere lucky streak; it was the result of a grueling ""Extended Dragon Certification"" campaign that is currently pushing the vehicle's lifespan from five missions to 15. How did engineers overcome the ""nightmare"" of saltwater corrosion and the invisible decay of propellant valves? By auditing over 360 individual vehicle elements and testing components to 50-flight durability, NASA and SpaceX are rewriting the laws of reusability.
To validate Dragon’s extended reusability program, NASA and SpaceX selected Endeavour (C206) as the pathfinder vehicle. The decision was strategic: no other capsule in the fleet had accumulated more real-world exposure to the full mission cycle of launch, orbital operations, reentry heating, splashdown, and refurbishment. If any spacecraft could reveal the long-term effects of repeated spaceflight, it was Endeavour.
The capsule first made history on May 30, 2020, during the landmark Demo-2 mission, which returned America’s human spaceflight capability from domestic soil for the first time since the Space Shuttle era.
Over the following years, Endeavour became the most experienced human-rated spacecraft ever built. By early 2026, it had spent more than 900 cumulative days in orbit, surpassing every previous crew transport vehicle in operational time and proving the durability of Crew Dragon’s design.
