Buninyong is one of Victoria’s oldest inland towns, sitting below the ancient volcanic cone of Mount Buninyong. In this short film, we explore slowly, taking in the village atmosphere, the natural world, and the quiet beauty of this goldfields-era township.
We had lunch at the Shared Table, Buninyong, a slow food style restaurant and the flavours were amazing.
The Botanic Gardens in Buninyong were founded in 1860.
This rotunda (or bandstand) was opened in 1901 - the same year Australia became an independent country.
It's a dreamy, tranquil place.
The lake is called "The Gong".
It was a spring fed swamp until enlarged in the 1870s.
It now surrounded by many European trees.
In Victorian times, this building was a grocery store.
You can see the original shingle roof.
Now, it's a cosy restaurant.
The food is gourmet ... and tastes divine.
The centre of Buninyong township.
It's easy to walk around town, and there is history everywhere.
Mount Buninyong is a ten minute drive away.
It's a dormant volcanic steam vent.
To the Wadawurrung people, it was formed by a man who fought with a spear of fire.
You can walk or drive to the top.
The mountain still has a sacred feeling.
You feel very close to the sky.
The wind never stops blowing.
And you can see for miles.
That's Mount Warrenheip - another dormant volcanic vent.
The countryside always seems to be green here.
