Episode Excerpt: It isn’t clear if the brothers noticed the bear first or if the bear discovered them beforehand, but one thing is clear, the grizzly bear wasted no time in defending herself and her cubs. In a blur of power, muscle, motion, and roaring, the sow descended on the brothers, who had no option to avoid her on the narrow trail on the steep hillside.
Just after four PM, a fellow hiker by the name of Craig Lerman approached the descending trail at Mystic Falls when something caught his eye. He noticed bear tracks in the mud and snow along the trail, then a bloody hat. A wristwatch with blood spatters appeared next, sending Lerman’s senses off the charts.
Having seen evidence of what could only be a tragic event, Lerman continued along the trail and soon heard a muffled and meager cry for help. Mark lay crumpled, battered, and bleeding just off the trail and cried out for help when he heard Lerman approaching.
Lerman was aghast at the sight that filled his vision. Mark had traumatic wounds to his head, face, and gaping wounds on his body. A pool of blood had formed around him as he hoped for rescue. He had used his cell phone to reach authorities for help, but Lerman discovered him before any rescue attempts could be organized.
