This ₹7 Lakh House Could Change Rural India 🏡🔥
Introducing the House of Nostalgia, a 100 m² experimental home by Project Terra, located in the rural landscape of Khandiya, Gujarat. More than just a residence, this project is a working prototype for the future of affordable, climate-responsive housing in India.
At first glance, the house reflects familiar elements of rural architecture—sloped tiled roofs, lime-plastered walls, earthen textures, and shaded verandahs. But beneath this simplicity lies a powerful idea: can rural homes evolve without losing their identity?
The answer lies in its modular design strategy. The house is composed of three interconnected units, allowing phased construction based on budget, time, and need. Each module, costing approximately ₹7 lakhs for 40 sqm, enables flexibility and scalability—making it a practical solution for evolving rural lifestyles.
Materiality is deeply rooted in context. Locally sourced stone, brick, lime, bamboo, timber, and reclaimed metal are used not for nostalgia, but for performance—ensuring thermal comfort, durability, and cost efficiency. Passive cooling is embedded into the design through thick walls, breathable materials, and shaded spaces.
Unlike typical rural housing that often mimics urban concrete structures, the House of Nostalgia proposes a “regional modernity”—a balance between tradition and progress. Features like built-in niches, verandahs, and mezzanine spaces enhance usability while maintaining cultural familiarity.
This is not just a house—it’s a replicable model, a framework that can adapt to different regions while staying rooted in local identity. It redefines rural housing as a space of innovation, sustainability, and dignity.
A small home with a big idea—one that could shape the future of housing across India.
