Actor Chris Evans discusses childhood anxieties regarding summer camp with Seth Meyers. They also explore the close, honest relationship Evans shares with family, contrasting it with more physically demanding acting roles.
Congratulations on this film.
Thank you.
You were great.
Thanks.
Your co-star, though.
That's all I care about.
Your co-star steals it.
All right.
You're 10-year-old.
Fine.
I got to go.
Thanks.
Can you not get her on the show?
She's so good.
What's the actress's name?
McKenna Grace.
Okay.
And she's 10-years-old?
Yeah, going on 40.
Yeah.
Were you, are you kind of blown away by her confidence and skills?
Without question.
I certainly was not that way when I was, it's tough finding a young actress who can kind
of master both professionalism, but still be wild and free.
I was, I was far from it.
What were you at 10?
Crying probably.
Yeah.
I cried a lot.
I really did.
Only out of sadness or were you a joy?
Are you a joy?
I wish.
No, it was out of real.
It was out of true, true panic.
I cried first day of school.
I cried first day at camp, truly up until honestly, honestly, if I'm being honest, maybe like
fourth grade, I think it was the first year I remember going to school and not losing
it.
Just being like, I got it.
I got it.
Nobody talked to me.
I got it.
So summer.
I'm not joking.
I remember being proud of myself, getting on the bus, being like, I made it.
And you were like, I would like to make an announcement to the entire bus.
Uh, yeah.
Summer camp, that sleep away camp?
Summer camp was a nightmare.
No, it was day camp.
This was, but you know what?
How old is it?
When are kids supposed to go to camp?
I don't know.
I will say I was a real homebody too.
I did not like going anywhere away from my parents, especially young.
I feel like I was eight or nine and even going to day camp, I like, you know, we had a sliding
door van.
I felt like a cat getting in a bathtub and my mother, at least two years in a row, we
wasted money on camp with my mom would just be like, fine, I guess we're going home.
And then by the third year, I think they actually even set up my daily schedule so that my,
my sister and one of my cousins who were both at the camp were, you know, with me every
I still just didn't want to go.
Well, there you go.
And I, well, you are very close.
We're very similar this way.
You're very close with your mother.
Yeah.
I'm very close to mine.
I will say we diverge slightly because I heard this story.
Is this true that you told your mom when you lost your virginity?
Yes.
Okay.
I did.
So I did.
I, you know, my whole family is just, we're very open with a lot of things.
If I had, you know, parties in high school, half the parties upstairs talking to her about,
well, inappropriate things.
Yeah.
She's a really, really, really cool woman.
And yeah, yeah, I did.
I raced home and I said, I did it.
I don't know what I was doing, but I think I did it.
And I didn't cry.
Oh, no, I cried.
Didn't say that.
Was she?
She may have as well.
Was she?
I cried too.
I was like, I can't believe how often I do this.
This was definitely not my first time.
Did you?
Was she happy to hear it?
I think so.
I don't know.
I think she was happy that I was willing to share it with her, you know?
I think that's what parents want.
I think as a parent, you just want to have honesty, you know what I mean?
That's one of the best things that my parents both achieved.
Somehow they felt like my friends, you know, and you don't want to be so cool that your
parents let you do anything, but when big things happen, you want to share it with them.
That's really cool.
Yeah, it's nice.
Are they happy?
I mean, I'm assuming they're fans of your Captain America work, but this film is a lot
more about family.
Are they happy when you do something that's a little more grounded?
Yeah.
I mean, I think the Captain America stuff is phenomenal, but there certainly are people
in my life that prefer, you know, different fare.
And I think they're all happy when I do something a little bit more relatable and I'm not punching
out aliens.
Yeah.
There's a look.
They're both.
They're great.
Look, aliens got to get punched.
Yeah.
