Ella Emhoff has been on SSRIs for 15 years.
She's the stepdaughter of Kamala Harris.
What?
I'm just sitting here crocheting waiting for a friend
and I was just listening to this podcast
that the Wall Street Journal put out about SSRIs
and anti-anxiety meds
and kind of the overprescription of them in America.
And it was making me think a lot
because I've been on SSRIs for over a decade,
almost 15 years probably.
How old is she?
Like, I mean, she doesn't look that old.
50?
No, no, she's not 50.
Like, oh my God.
What the ****?
She said for 50, that means 11 years old.
Holy ----.
They were calling out the lack of research
on long-term use of these things,
lack of information that doctors give
about coming off of these meds
and kind of the psychological effects they can have.
That's brutal.
It really got me thinking
how little I've thought about that,
naively, obviously.
But I've noticed that every time I've gone off of it
for a week or missed it or for whatever reason,
it has been really hard for me
and I've had a really hard time
because I don't know if this is something
that I feel like is being talked about enough because-
That's brutal.
I feel like so many of us are on these meds
coming to terms with having chronic depression
and anxiety and things like that.
Honestly, I'm going to give maybe a hot take.
I think that the overwhelming majority
of these people's depression and problems are self-induced.
They are exacerbated by social media,
doctors, and by their lifestyles.
I think that the over-medication of people
that continually engage in unhealthy behaviors
is a really dangerous path to go down.
Also, it's really amazing and awesome
to see how many people have been on SSRIs
and anti-anxiety meds for so long
and then it's so helpful.
I have no plan on getting off of mine anytime soon,
any medication.
What's weird to me about it is,
I don't know why you'd want to have to take medication
for presumably your entire life.
Where's the light at the end of this tunnel?
I have probably the most regressive
and stupid opinions on medical health stuff.
I think that if your testosterone is really low,
you should go out and cut down five trees.
Start working out.
I am okay with being on forever if I need to-
You want my estrogen?
Watch the view.
Oh, I'm going to get off of it.
But yeah, this is great.
That's insane, man.
You have people going and taking this medication
and ---- for 10 years, bro.
You got spawn camp.
Kamala came into my life when I was 14.
Famously, a very easy time for a teenager.
But no matter what, Kamala was there for me.
She was patient, caring, and always took me seriously.
Like, I feel bad for her, really.
If you're going out and you're getting this medication
given to you whenever you're a preteen,
that's insane, man.
Like, I don't even know what to say.
