When building a tiny home a lot of people choose to loft their bedrooms like I did and it makes sense.
When stacking a sleep space you get more room in your kitchen, living room, and bathroom, but I know lofts aren't for everyone.
We're up in the loft space and as you can see my head is
touching the ceiling. One of my regrets is this light. I hit my head on it sometimes.
It's kind of in the way. I have smacked my head really hard once, but I was on a gummy.
Those gummies are gonna get you every time. All right guys, I'm not gonna lie. It's pretty tight up here.
I'm feeling a little claustrophobic myself, and I'm a tiny house person, so I would be sleeping downstairs.
Ground-floor bedrooms solve all of that. These designs are easier to get in and out of which is perfect for aging in place.
Plus they allow for more privacy and allow you to use the loft space for storage.
Today we're touring five ground-floor bedroom tiny home designs each with a unique layout.
Proving how versatile and accessible tiny home living can be.
Our first stop is Andy and Gina who designed a tiny home unlike any other because this design features not one,
but two ground-floor bedrooms.
The modern home boasts an open layout and maximizes every inch inside without relying on lofts.
Their college-aged daughters have a private guest room with bunk beds, built-in wardrobes, and lots of natural light.
We wanted to make sure that they
enjoyed coming home.
So we put in these bunks, made them nice and cozy.
So there's lots of windows, lots of light, and they have space for all their stuff.
These are full wardrobe, 24 inches deep.
The bedroom is complete with a pocket door which offers privacy that would otherwise be difficult to establish in a traditional tiny home loft.
And the primary bedroom is equally impressive featuring floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and a creative built-in reading nook.
In this one, we included a bump out over the tongue, put a window here, put drawer systems here,
and then kind of made it a nice little spot if you want to sit and read.
This design proves that tiny homes with ground-floor bedrooms can not only create comfort for the homeowners themselves,
but for guests and family members too.
Next up, we're visiting Village Farm Tiny House Community near Austin, Texas, where Chante has settled into her
399 square foot home. After escaping skyrocketing rent in the city, she invested in a home that reflects her personal style.
Spoiler alert, it's luxurious, feminine, and full of clever storage ideas.
The big draw to this model, among many things, was it really just checked all of my boxes.
It's got the perfect layout for me.
Her ground-floor bedroom is a standout feature in the home, and the bed frame doubles as a clever storage system.
What I needed was a bed that had enough space underneath.
I keep all of my shoes under this bed, and I've got different shelves and baskets and things to kind of create two levels,
so I can fit a lot of shoes under there.
This design gives her a full practical bedroom that doesn't sacrifice space elsewhere in the house.
For Chante, the bedroom played a key role in choosing this model,
offering the comfort and functionality she'll enjoy for years to come. At this stage in my life,
I've landed where I need to be. Financial freedom is what I'm looking forward to. I plan to be here for the long haul.
Next up, we're heading to Los Angeles to visit Sung, who downsized from an expensive New York apartment to make a
140 square foot ADU her full-time home.
So I wanted to
design it so that it has, even if they're small features, features that I'm really going to be able to enjoy and function well in.
While Sung's house is the smallest in today's lineup, the home features an extremely efficient use of space
and includes a peaceful ground-floor sleeping nook.
This bedroom is practical with storage tucked under the bed and customizable lighting that adapts to her mood.
It is a full-size bed. The plywood walls and ceiling in this space
makes you feel like you're being hugged. People have asked if it
feels claustrophobic or if it feels stuffy, but the amount of sunlight and the size of the door
that's actually right in this space
creates a really nice flow of air. So it does not get stuffy and
I was also even concerned that I might feel claustrophobic, but it's a very soothing space.
The lighting can be adjusted right from here with the remote
to many different settings.
So whether I'm reading or whether I'm trying to wind down, it's all controlled by this one little remote.
Sung's home proves that even in the tiniest homes, a ground-floor bedroom can provide privacy and coziness
and that a small footprint doesn't mean you have to compromise on comfort.
Heading now to the Oregon coast, Sandy's home at Tiny Tranquility stands out with thoughtful accessibility.
Her home boasts a spacious footprint that is 11 feet wide, but still maintains the title of a tiny home at just
352 square feet.
As you can see, I don't have stairs. I have a ramp here
that was added a few years ago for my partner who needed it at that particular time.
I have no intention of ever going back to stairs because it's so convenient.
It's the greatest thing and who knows, I may very well need a ramp myself.
While emphasizing themes of accessibility and storage,
Sandy opted for a ground-floor bedroom that will be both comfortable and practical long-term.
Plus, this bedroom has more storage than any we've seen so far.
Moving forward here, this is the bedroom.
This is a queen-size bed, perfect for watching television, of which I do in here.
There's lots of storage. I have cabinet storage all across, which could have been just a wall.
I have drawer space all across here, which is wonderful.
This section was utilized also for storage,
so some of the things like extra games and things that you don't use all the time work perfectly up there and don't take up
valuable space.
The nightstands are built in, once again with storage on both sides. And another area,
which I thought was brilliant, was they left the area across the top of the closet completely open.
The closet is a double-sized closet and also has drawers built in below.
And I can even hear the ocean when the window is open here. So it's great.
This next home is bringing us to Montana, where we're going to meet Morgan, who lives in a craftsman-style
tiny home that allows him to focus on what matters to him most, his horses.
Things cost so much these days, especially out here in Montana.
It gives me something so that I'm kind of not a slave to my house.
When you look around this tiny home, it's cuter than a button.
With a rooftop deck and large patio, this home blends function with fun.
But the ground floor bedroom is what makes daily living easy and comfortable.
This is a full-size queen bed. I put a mattress in here. There's storage under here
in these drawers. There's a cabinet in here
for putting clothes and whatnot.
I also have another fan up here with the lights,
which is a really handy thing.
Another thing that this helps about pulling the heat down, because when we did this tiny home,
they put the heater up here, it would still be cold down here. So when it's 20 below in Montana,
this fan right here made it so that I was able to heat this easily.
So when I'm in here, I can open the windows on both sides and the breeze goes right through,
which is really nice.
So this is actually, these windows are something I really like as well.
Morgan reminds us that the right bedroom isn't just about function, but also about how it makes you feel after a long day.
For some people, the loft isn't a deal breaker, but sleeping in it is.
Take Kaylee, for example, who decided to break all the rules and put her living room in the loft
so that she can have a downstairs bedroom.
Welcome to my loft space.
In my design from years ago, I always knew I wanted this to be a living room.
I couldn't imagine making the loft my bedroom, just waking up and being so
crouched and trying to make my bed in a loft space.
And so I wanted a really cozy place to have a
couch and a TV
and I feel like I
made it my perfect living room. Pretty much any height person could sit on this couch and be comfortable,
which I think is really important.
Obviously when you come into the loft, you have to get on your knees,
but you could be 6'5 and sit on this couch. And I
really suggest
if you're thinking about making a loft space,
making it into a living room.
Is this layout genius or ridiculous? What do you think? And guys,
these are just a few examples of ground floor bedroom layouts that we featured on this channel.
So let me know in the comments,
do you prefer a lofted bedroom in your tiny home design or a ground floor bedroom?
