61 days to go now until it all begins.
Turkey officially punched their ticket for the first time in 24 years,
beating Kosovo in the playoff final last month.
Plenty of their players, of course, ply their trade in Serie A.
Some big names here.
Troy, who is their best Turkish player in Serie A, of these names?
Kinnan Yildiz, the standout?
Oh, 100% for me, obviously.
You've got a lot of players there, like Hakan as well.
They're very good players, but Yildiz is the spark.
He scores goals, he creates goals.
He's fun to watch.
He takes people on, right foot, left foot.
Very exciting player.
And I think Turkey will be a very difficult team for the U.S. to face.
I believe they are, in my opinion, favourites to win that group
now that they got through.
And it's on the U.S.
to deliver a real good performance if they're going to beat this Turkish side.
And it'd be a really important game,
because I think it's the third group game they play in the SoFi Stadium.
So the third match of the World Cup for the U.S.
men's national team.
How will they have to approach that kind of game against Turkey, eh?
Yeah, very careful, I think,
because attacking options that they have are crazy.
And Güler and Yildiz and even Çağatay Nolu,
what he can do from the midfield as well.
There's a real, for me and that Turkey team, is a real maturity,
a real know-how, how to get stuff done.
They play in big, big clubs all over the world.
A lot of them play Champions League football.
We saw the ones that play Serie A football as well.
So it's a difficult team to play against.
I think you have to be really careful with the front three that they have.
And you have to be able to manage moments in the game.
I don't think that is the type of game where you could just say,
oh, we're going to just do what we want to do.
We're going to do our game and that's it for 90 minutes.
I think you have to be very cautious of different moments in that game
and know how to manage it really well against them.
They're a talented group, but they also have a really good identity.
I agree with Troy on everything he said.
And Mandela, since coming in to Turkey,
the fact that he got them for the first time in 24 years,
they know how they want to play.
And even when they've tested themselves against the big dogs,
I mean, they beat USA, but their match against Spain,
I remember watching and seeing how they played and they got a tie in that one.
They're fantastic to watch.
There's a lot of different pieces, but all their players can play with the ball.
They're all extremely talented.
And you feel like there's a spark at any moment.
And the fact that they have so many,
they're playing at high pressure moments that are big player,
important players for their teams,
says a lot about what they could do in the World Cup.
Troy, let's focus in on Yildiz.
He's someone we'll be watching in this game coming up between Atalanta and Juve.
How has he developed his game in the last season or so?
Because I feel like when I watch, he really has stepped up another level.
Yeah, he's started to grow in confidence as a man, as a human.
He's now taking this team.
125 appearances for Juventus just before he got 21.
That just shows the level.
So many young players now play 20, 30 games since they've made it.
This young man has had to go the hard way.
But he also, as I say, he's taking the team now.
And I think there's a big difference between him and Conce Sal.
Conce Sal is like, I want to score first.
Whereas Yildiz is like, OK, what does the team need?
And that's where I think his growth and maturity has been like,
he knows he can score.
He knows he can assist.
But it might be that I'm getting doubled and triple teamed in the game.
So I'll go and stand out here and leave all the space on the opposite side.
His maturity and football IQ has just gone up another level.
And I think with this coach, he'll only get better and again,
the World Cup to boot always makes players focus.
And just trade and try that a little bit harder, doesn't it, Marco?
Yeah, 100%.
I think there was a big conversation when he took the number 10 at Juventus.
To be 19 years old and to take the 10, everyone that's worn it.
Man, he hasn't felt the pressure.
Maybe in the beginning a little bit, it was not easy.
But since then, he's always the guy.
Every single week.
If Juventus are to qualify for Champions League football,
if Juventus is to build anything good in the next couple of years,
he is the center of that team.
He's so direct.
He wants to beat his man.
He's not one of those wingers that gets the ball
and is always playing it safe, is always going backwards.
He's got that ability to change a game in any moment.
I remember the match against Inter in the high pressure moment.
For me, he's always the one that we look to.
So Turkey has a star on their hands.
And the fact that he plays in Italy, we talk a lot about not having talent in Italy.
Him, Nico Paz, they're some of the few that we could see dominating world football,
I think, one day.
Also, great assault.
Like, I love Yildiz, too.
Great assault, though.
The number 10, wearing the number 10 at Juventus, it doesn't mean the same thing.
You know, the pressure moments.
They play for fourth place every season for the last five seasons.
So it's not like they play for the Zuleto.
He hasn't really won anything.
Still, it's a 10 for Juventus.
OK, fine.
That's a different conversation for a different time.
But Yildiz, for me, the most important thing that I see when he gets the ball
is, like, forward right away.
He gets the ball, boom.
The first touch is forward.
He wants to attack.
He wants to dribble.
He wants to play forward.
And I think in a time where we see some of the best teams now,
where guys take it and pay and it goes around and it goes back
and they're scared to lose it.
He's not scared to play.
And he's, you know, oozing with confidence.
He's fun. He's really fun.
Yeah, there was a lovely quote earlier on in the season from Spalletti
in one of the pre-match interviews where he said he's a player
that's got magic in his boots.
And he does have that ability to turn a game just in a second.
Another name that we saw on that list there,
for Inter Milan, another great season for him.
He's obviously at the other end of his career, much more experienced.
But when he strikes a ball like this, unbelievable, Marco.
Yeah. Also, though, his growth in the last year is to transform
from this winger and ten, which we saw at Milan,
to now being this deep lying midfielder who is so calm and cool under pressure
for this Inter team that punched way above their weight,
getting to two finals in the last four years.
He was absolutely crucial.
And he's another one, just like with Yildiz in this Juventus team.
When he's not there for Inter, you see a massive drop off.
And they have this blend, don't they, Troy?
Turkey, when you look at the team, they've got the youth in Yildiz
and some of the other players and some great experience, too.
Yeah. And another part that he adds as well is the penalty taking.
Again, if you're going to go deeper in the round,
you may have to get into a penalty shootout.
If you know you've got one of the best in world football at taking penalties,
just think not only the training exercise he can do with the rest of the team,
but also that confidence that he might be the one taking it first.
As a team, you go, oh, we've scored this one.
You're already one up on everybody.
I think it's a great mix.
I think they will cause people problems.
And I think just because of the way they've had to qualify,
people will overlook them a little bit.
Like, oh, they had to qualify to get in.
You know, we've already been here.
This is a serious outfit.
Serious, serious outfit.
We got the English giving them lessons on penalties now, haven't we?
Well, that's a worry.
Well, that's a worry at the start.
Yeah, we're not star strong, too.
We know. We're aware.
OK, how do you got to be there to talk?
That was a good one.
How did the US go about beating Turkey?
How do you think they're going to set up for this game on the porch?
Yeah, again, I think it's a match where you you have the things
you want to accomplish in a game, but it's not one where you just say,
oh, we're just going to do what we do well.
I think you have to be pragmatic.
I think you have to be defensive against them.
You have to have an eye on Yildiz at all times.
And when you can double him, you have to double him, Guler as well.
You see the goal, Chahanoglu scores because you give him space
at the top of the box.
So they have to be wary of that as well.
And if they get a goal to I think they have to drop then
and be smart in those moments.
But it's not a team you're going to roll over.
They're not going to roll over them for 90 minutes.
They might have a span of 20 minutes where they control stuff
and they can boss a little bit because the Americans do quite physical
and they have their players that play Champions League football as well.
But definitely is going to be moments in through the 90 minutes.
And that's what I was going to say for the US.
I want to see them use all the physicality that they've got.
The hype that, yes, you can sit and start in low blocks.
But when you get a moment and you win the ball back, go be direct.
With the greatest respect, I don't want to see the US
trying to dominate the ball play left to right.
You've got Tyler Adams in midfield.
You've got Weston McKennie.
You've got players who just go, bang, we're going to have you.
We're going to have it.
We'll stand strong and we're going to run all over you.
In games like this, they could sit deep, but goal would be really aggressive
and make sure that they know you played against the US.
Because we said it's the third group game as well.
So both teams could could need a result in that one to get through
to the knockout stages.
