How to Grow Sweet Pea Flowers from Seed Easy Step by Step Guide

Sow your sweet pea seeds indoors, 6 to 8 weeks before the final frost, if you live in a cold
climate. Plant the seeds half an inch deep. If starting outdoors, plant them 1 inch deep,
and space them 2 to 3 inches apart. Then water the soil, and place in a sunny area.
The seed should germinate within 10 to 21 days. Use supports, such as sticks or a trellis,
as sweet peas need something to climb. Once the seedlings have developed multiple
sets of leaves, you can begin to transplant them. Make sure to do this carefully,
to avoid damaging the roots. Make sure the soil is well draining,
and rich with organic matter. Ideally, it's best to space them at least 15 centimeters apart,
and at the same depth as they were growing. Then, water the soil. Sweet peas require
consistent moisture, however, make sure to avoid overwatering.
Reinstall the supports immediately after transplanting, making sure not to damage the
roots. Once the last frost has passed, move the plants outdoors. Adjust them to the weather,
by placing them outside for a few hours a day, for about a week. The flowers do best in full
sunlight. Depending on when they're planted, the sweet peas should bloom in late spring to early
summer. To encourage abundant blooms, apply liquid fertilizer every few weeks, as these
flowers are heavy feeders. Removing old flowers can also help the plant produce more flowers.
Keep an eye out for pests like slugs and aphids, and diseases like powdery mildew.
Use insecticidal soap for the pests, and ensure proper spacing to prevent powdery mildew.
If you choose to leave dying flowers on the plant, seed pods will form in their place.
Once they turn brown, they can be harvested, and the seeds inside can be planted for next season.
Once temps get above 24 degrees Celsius, the plant will start to struggle, and will usually
begin to die. This happens around summertime, as the weather gets too hot for the plant.
Providing some shade, can help prolong their lifespan.
