HISTORICAL MATCH | USA vs FRANCE | Men's VNL 2022. One of the Greatest Volleyball Battles Ever Played!!! 🔥
What happens when two volleyball giants collide on the biggest stage? You get a five-set war that defines an era…
In the grand final of the 2022 Volleyball Nations League, the USA and France delivered a match that had EVERYTHING — power, emotion, momentum swings, and pure championship drama.
France came out like a storm. With unstoppable energy and precision, they crushed the first two sets 25–16, 25–19, leaving the USA searching for answers. It looked like a straight-set finish… but this was only the beginning.
The Americans refused to go down. Led by the brilliance of Micah Christenson and the firepower of Matt Anderson, USA flipped the script completely. They dominated sets 3 and 4 (25–15, 25–21), turning the match into a full-blown battle for survival.
Everything came down to the final set. One set. One champion.
And that’s when France showed why they were Olympic champions.
With ice in their veins, Earvin Ngapeth led his team with fearless attacks and unbelievable composure. Alongside him, Jean Patry delivered under pressure, while Jenia Grebennikov kept rallies alive with impossible digs.
Point by point, France pulled away… Until the final whistle — 15–10 in the fifth set.
🏆 FRANCE ARE VNL 2022 CHAMPIONS 🏆
This wasn’t just a final. This was a clash of champions. A test of nerves. A match that will be remembered for years.
USA fought like warriors. France finished like legends.
So it's interesting to see how they'll handle the situation.
Both of them were involved with Long Beach.
They've won the NCAA.
They know what that kind of pressure is like.
But this is another level again.
It's a totally different ball game when you're here.
Keep an eye on Engapet.
He's going to wow you with how he plays the game.
Oh, come on!
Goodness!
Incredible running forward.
Sets the ball perfectly to the outside.
And look at Russell cutting it.
Would you like that on a platter, sir?
A little bit of parsley with that one.
Just a touch.
Oh my!
Carl Ensign has gone off.
One opposite for another.
Something to build on for the USA.
Christensen now with the serve.
Oh, well played.
So it's deemed to have gone inside the antenna.
And the moment then that Brizard touched it, it's out of play.
So Christensen will...
Oh, set.
Oh, incredible.
That off the shoulder number not working for Defalco.
Nice pass.
Just a little bit inside.
But Patry again.
He comes up with solutions more often than not.
Off he goes.
There will be double.
Indeed.
And it was.
Oh, has that caught some fingers?
Has it?
No, says the referee.
But the players are all...
Brizard with the serve.
France move into a strong series of rotations.
Oh, it's a brilliant serve from Brizard.
He's got the better of Rolando Gutierre.
And to be able to hit this ball directly in the scenes,
you want to be able to do this.
That's a...
Oh, you're kidding.
Well, it's popped up very kindly.
And then in the end, it will be.
It's USA who kept the point.
Christensen, he's always up for a bit of bouncer.
Pretends to swing at that ball at the end there.
And it wasn't even coming over the net.
Try that.
Nigra Benikov.
Oh, it's a free one in the middle for Ingepen.
What a set by...
USA block to the left side of the court.
And then Ingepen just comes in out of the back row.
Unexpected.
Trouble again.
For those of you that are absolutely not,
serving is the one time the ball's in there.
The ball's going to come to you when you're there.
Hey, remember your responsibility, okay?
Trying to change some things up and get creative.
Oh, come on.
How does he...
I don't know.
The USA don't care because they have the point.
Nice work by Brissat.
Christensen kind of knew it was coming,
but still couldn't stop it.
When you read it as a setter,
you're kind of anticipating that.
There's just that little delay from Brissat.
And then it's hard to read where he's going to go with the ball.
Ingepen, again, with every shot in the book.
Set point.
Well, you wrap up the set.
Oh, they've done it.
Ingepen puts it down.
It's 2-0 now for France against the USA.
And would you believe it?
France are one set away from gold here in Bologna.
They are playing so well.
Ingepen hits this one just over and through the block.
Sees it really well.
They saw every shot from him already.
Tipping.
Just clever, clever play from Ingepen.
He knew that they had the three.
Smart play.
Nice work by Russell.
Same thing again.
Passing that quick ball all the way to the left side of the court.
Quick set over the top.
That rhythm is really good to the left side right now.
Getting Russell going is going to be big for them.
Well, they are allowing it.
That song, the Macarena,
might be used when went to Reina.
Let's play.
Well, this is a little bit of genius from Scoro.
Patry is good.
Moyer can come in and hit from up near the ceiling.
Oh, yes.
How good has he been on the right side?
I mean, he's always been good.
Then they sent him in servicey.
But this is a back row attack from the right side of the court.
When he's having to go against Evan.
Not only that as well.
Christensen finding him.
That's a great swing from Patry.
Apparently, he's got a hold.
That'll probably be out on social media.
You can get involved on social media as well.
Hashtag be part of the game.
We'll go to at Volleyball World.
So smart.
TJ De Falco.
Oh, and then come back with interest from Patry.
That's a whippiest of whippy arms.
I love that you thought maybe.
Easy one for Shoji.
He's just working so well at the moment.
And even with Enkampet in that full bunch.
He's in there waiting to maybe help.
But again, not in there soon enough.
Middle blocker jumps.
Russell out of the back row.
Oh, my goodness.
Well, you don't need an invitation to play the ball.
Not sure what Russell was waiting for.
That's tough.
Oh, yes.
I think what's happening.
I'm just looking at that then.
All right, so Christensen's off there.
But Russell's just taking a little bit longer.
He's not going too quickly.
And he's able to do what he wants with the ball now.
Yeah, it's the tempo of the set.
He's a lot of quick points for France.
Quickly out wide.
Gold medal on the line.
Shoji straight in there.
Well played, Russell.
Oh, get out of the way, Smith.
Well done.
And that's in.
That's incredible.
Oh, yes.
Great serve, Brissard.
Russell could not get right quick enough for that.
Brissard has such an effective serve.
One of the best servers on the squad.
It's that one.
France just edging in front.
Oh, ace, Brissard.
Talk about saving it all till the end.
Wow.
And moving it around.
Gets Russell on one.
Goes out to Margot Tatia, who handles the next one.
That's got the one-on-one.
And the referees are saying, guys, guys, guys, guys, get back.
We're not having any of that.
Everybody, go back to where you came back.
We're not having any of that.
Everybody, go back to where you came from.
Really good pass.
Really good block for the USA.
An interesting decision.
Filipino passes his ball.
He's on the ground.
And they still set him a pretty fast tempo ball that he can get up.
But the block had time to get set.
It's not sure.
That was the best possible decision.
Great volleyball.
Right to Falco.
Finds a way through.
Good ball in.
But it's not happened.
And France have done it.
They were 2-0 down.
They were pegged back to 2-0.
But in the fifth and in the decider,
they've got it done.
And France are the Volleyball Nations League champions for 2022.
A massive victory for them and for coach Cedric Gianni.
What a game.
