There are two kinds of pain in this world.
Pain that hurts.
Pain that alters.
Every man at some point in his life
is gonna lose a battle. He's gonna fight and he's gonna lose.
You ever feel like nothing good was ever gonna happen to you?
We are dying to know life can ever breath.
Every life we take
the way of the warrior.
We're in hell right now.
Believe me.
And
we can stay here, get the ---- kicked out of us,
or
we can fight our way back.
But what makes him a man is that in the midst of that battle, he does not lose himself.
Are you a man who once said death smiles at us all? All a man can do is smile back.
So all I want to do is go the distance.
Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed.
And if I can go that distance,
and that bell rings and I'm still standing, I know for the first time in my life,
that I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood.
When I was a kid, my father put me in boxing camp. Middle of summer, 90 degrees.
Every day after sparring in that, they make you do a hundred laps and 50 pull-ups.
They push you until you either threw up or passed out or both.
All you had to do is quit and let me guess, you didn't quit.
I quit every goddamn day.
I just never said it out loud.
Because no way was I gonna give them the satisfaction of breaking me.
You quit. Why is that, sir?
Well, you know, I gave it everything I had.
But there's always gonna be someone better out there.
Everyone has limits and in the end, I ran straight into mine.
Maybe you can't relate, but you'll get it when you're older.
No, I won't.
I never give up, sir. I'll die before I get it.
Most purpose is more burden than glory.
Trust me, you never want to be the guy who avoids it because you can't live with the burden.
Dreams make good stories.
And everything important happens when we're awake.
Because that's when we make things happen.
At some point, you gotta decide for yourself who you want to be.
Can't let nobody make that decision for you.
Listen, you want to change things in a big way.
And you need to make some big changes.
One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it.
Your mind is like this water, my friend.
When it is agitated, it becomes difficult to see.
But if you allow it to settle, the answer becomes clear.
I never saw your future.
Only its possibilities.
You have such a capacity for goodness.
You always excelled.
But not because you craved success.
But because of your fear of failure.
That's what made me a great doctor.
It's precisely what kept you from greatness.
Arrogance and fear still keep you from learning the simplest and most significant lesson of all.
Which is?
It's not about you.
These days, they got a name for just about everything.
Doesn't matter what they call you.
It's the deeds make the man.
Yeah, but my deeds just made things worse.
I'm a fraud.
I'm a phony.
My friends believed in me, but they need some kind of hero.
Then be a hero.
Oh, no.
No, no.
You don't understand.
I'm not even supposed to be here.
That's right.
You came a long way to find something that isn't out here.
Don't you see?
It's not about you.
It's about them.
But I can't go back.
Don't know that you got a choice, son.
No man can walk out on his own story.
Sometimes you gotta get through your fear to see the beauty on the other side.
What are you afraid of Eric?
I'm not afraid of anything.
No.
You're afraid of something and it's stopping you.
Stopping?
From what?
From becoming what we all know you're capable of being.
What I'm capable of?
You know something, Mr. Feeny?
I'm always hearing that.
What I'm capable of?
I took the SATs last year, remember?
I blew them.
You know, maybe I'm just not meant to be in college.
Maybe you're someone who gives up too easily.
What'll it be, Ms. Matthews?
Who are you?
Afraid, are you?
No, sir.
See through you.
We can.
Be mindful of your feelings.
Fear is the path to the dark side.
Fear leads to anger.
Anger leads to hate.
Hate leads to suffering.
Along the way, you're gonna need to do things you don't wanna do
or might not think you can do.
It's okay to be scared.
It's natural to doubt yourself.
But if you can push through that
and do what needs to be done,
you'll do just fine.
Everything's scarred, man.
Make us who we are.
We're not meant to go back and fix it.
And there's nothing broken with you that needs to be fixed.
Take it from an old guy who's made a lot of mistakes.
You wanna live your best.
Live your life.
Don't let your tragedy define you.
What if it's supposed to define me?
Your tragedy made you a hero.
And also made me alone.
Dad, I don't believe it.
You're telling me that the future is,
can only be,
more of this?
This is the way things are.
You can't change nature.
Change is nature, Dad.
The part that we can influence.
And it starts when we decide.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that
other people won't feel insecure around you.
We were all meant to shine as children do.
It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.
To deliberately believe in lies,
while knowing they're false.
Examples of this in everyday life.
Oh, I need to be pretty to be happy.
I need to be thin.
Famous.
This is a marketing holocaust.
24 hours a day, for the rest of our lives,
the powers that be are hard at work.
Dumbing us to death.
So, to defend ourselves
and fight against assimilating this dullness
into our thought processes,
we must learn to read.
To stimulate our own imaginations.
To cultivate our own consciousness.
Our own belief systems.
We all need these skills.
To defend, to preserve our own minds.
We're the middle children of history, man.
No purpose or place.
We have no great war.
No great depression.
Our great war is a spiritual war.
Our great depression is our lives.
You're not where you want to be.
You feel like you're supposed to be somewhere else.
You said it.
Well, say you could snap your fingers and be wherever you wanted to be.
I bet you'd still feel this way.
Not in the right place.
The point is you can't get so hung up on where you'd rather be
that you forget how to make the most of where you are.
Take a break from worrying about what you can't control.
Live a little.
I'm not ready.
No one ever is.
We don't get to choose our time.
Death is what gives life meaning.
To know your days are numbered.
Your time is short.
Quit, don't quit.
Noodles, don't noodles.
You are too concerned with what was.
And what will be.
There's a saying.
Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow is a mystery.
But today is a gift.
That is why it is called a present.
You're made of metal.
But you have feelings.
And you think about things.
And that means you have a soul.
And souls don't die.
Mom says it's something inside of all good things.
And that it goes on forever and ever.
How does it feel to be dying?
It feels like all these beautiful pieces of life are flying around me and
I'm trying to catch them.
But the pieces are moving faster now and I can't catch them all.
I can feel them slip into my fingertips.
And soon, where they used to be, my granddaughter breathing and my son laughing, there will be
nothing.
I know it feels like you have all the time in the world.
But you don't.
So stop playing it so cool.
Catch the moments of your life.
Catch them while you're young and quick.
Because sooner than you know it, you'll be old and slow.
You know, when you get old in life,
things get taken from you.
I mean, that's part of life.
But you only learn that when you start losing stuff.
You find out life's this game of inches.
Because in either game,
life or football,
the margin for error is so small.
I mean,
one half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it.
One half second too slow, too fast, you don't quite catch it.
The inches we need are everywhere around us.
They're in every break of the game,
every minute, every second.
Once you do the hard stuff,
it becomes not that hard.
I may not be the man I used to be, the one who didn't graduate from high school,
but unexpectedly, I've come a long, long way.
And in the end,
I still get to be me,
but better.
Now you're probably saying to yourselves,
how did he do it?
And for why?
The answer is,
I did these things for myself.
Not to impress anyone,
but because I'm surrounded by impressive people.
One doesn't expect to get from life what one has already learned it cannot give.
Rather,
one begins to see
that life is a kind of sewing time.
And the harvest is not yet here.
Never stop,
no matter how many failures.
When you know you're doing what you're meant to do,
you have to try.
The thing is that
we all,
we all have problems.
We all have things that we're dealing with, right?
Some days we're better than others.
Some days we're not so great.
Some days we have limited space
for others.
Well, that's it.
I mean, we
go to work, we do our jobs,
and it's over.
We're here and then we're gone.
I've seen that rage in me
because I'm angry.
You know, but when I,
I
look at that anger and if I push it aside and just put it away,
all I,
all I see is
hurt.
I just, I just see
pain.
All is not as lost as it seems.
You know,
extraordinary things only happen to extraordinary people.
Maybe it's a sign
that you've got an extraordinary destiny.
Hope is a good thing,
maybe the best of things,
and no good thing ever dies.
We don't read and write poetry because it's cute.
We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race,
and the human race is filled with passion.
Medicine, law, business, engineering.
These are noble pursuits necessary to sustain life.
Poetry,
beauty,
romance, love.
These are what we stay alive for,
that you are here,
that life exists,
and identity,
that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse.
What will your verse be?
Hey, we never found out what 22's purpose was.
Excuse me?
You know, her spark, her purpose.
Was it music, biology, walking?
We don't assign purposes.
Where did you get that idea?
Because I have piano.
It's what I was born to do.
That's my spark.
A spark isn't a soul's purpose.
Oh, you mentals and your passions,
your purposes,
your meanings of life.
So basic.
No, no, it...
I'm scared, Joe.
I'm not good enough.
Anyway, I never got my spark.
Yes, you did.
Your spark isn't your purpose.
That last box fills in when you're ready to come live.
What do you think you'll do?
How are you going to spend your life?
I'm not sure.
But I do know,
I'm gonna live every minute of it.
Parting a suit is not a miracle, Bruce.
It's a magic trick.
A single mom who's working two jobs
and still finds time to take her kid to soccer practice,
that's a miracle.
A teenager who says no to drugs and yes to an education,
that's a miracle.
People want me to do everything for them,
and what they don't realize is
they have the power.
You want to see a miracle, son?
Be the miracle.
Forget everything else.
Your destiny still awaits.
The secret ingredient is
nothing.
To make something special, you just have to believe it's special.
There is no secret ingredient.
Peter,
I know things have been difficult lately,
and I'm sorry about that.
I think I know what you're feeling.
Ever since you were a little boy,
you've been living with so many unresolved things.
Well, take it from an old man,
those things send us down a road.
They make us who we are.
And if anyone's destined for greatness,
it's you, son.
You believe
a man can't change his destiny?
I think a man does what he can
until his destiny is revealed.
Persistence.
Nothing in this world can take the place
of good old persistence.
Talent won't.
Nothing's more common than
unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius won't.
Unrecognized genius is practically a cliché.
Education won't.
Why, the world is full of educated fools.
Persistence and determination alone
are all powerful.
Don't ever let somebody tell you
you can't do something.
Not even me.
You gotta dream.
You gotta protect it.
People can't do something themselves.
They want to tell you you can't do it.
You want something?
Go get it.
Period.
I wish none of this had happened.
So do all who live to see such times.
But that is not for them to decide.
All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
Simba, let me tell you something my father told me.
Look at the stars.
The great kings of the past
look down on us from those stars.
Really?
Yes.
So whenever you feel alone,
just remember
that those kings will always be up there to guide you.
And so will I.
But I can't see them, Dad.
Keep looking, son.
Keep looking.
So, uh, what happens next?
We come back tomorrow night and do it all again.
What's wrong, Teach?
It's just I've been waiting on this day for my entire life.
I thought I'd feel different.
I heard this story about a fish.
He swims up to this older fish and says,
I'm trying to find this thing they call the ocean.
The ocean, says the older fish.
That's what you're in right now.
This, says the young fish, this is water.
What I want is the ocean.
